Treating Dogs with Maggot infestations

On-site First Aid Treatment for Prevention and Cure of Maggot wounds in Street Animals:

It is the onset of warm weather and humid conditions that trigger an onset of maggot wound related queries on our helpline and the below treatment protocol has been shared aplenty by us through our website www.jaagruti.org, e-mail queries and blog based queries.

A horrifying number of street animals die tragic and slow painful deaths owing to maggot infestations. But, maggot wounds can be prevented and treated on site very easily (if noticed before it is too late) and these unfortunate deaths can be prevented if animal welfare volunteers read through this article below and back the knowledge so acquired with animal handling skills and some amount of patience, determination and dedication; all of which are essential qualities that are required to help heal a voiceless animal.

What are Maggots and how do they infest an animal? : 

Flies get attracted to garbage, carcasses, rotting food, open wounds and faeces and use them as substrate to lay their eggs. A particular type of fly, called screwworm flies has a special fondness to lay its eggs on fresh, untreated open wounds on any animal’s body and that is what can trigger maggot infestation. These wounds could be there on an animal’s body due to a fight they might have gotten into, itching, licking, accidental injuries etc. A wound of the size of a pinhole may be enough for a fly to get attracted and lay eggs on. In areas the animal can reach with his tongue, these fly eggs are usually licked off. Danger areas for an animal where maggot infestations are common are the ears, anywhere on the head and neck, back of the body, anus.

These eggs, once laid on the wound site of an animal can hatch within a few hours into larvae or “maggots”, which start out very small just like a thin rice grain but then start feeding into the flesh and organs of any animal (be it a calf, a cat, a tiger or a dog) and then they (maggots) grow fat and up to an inch long. Alongside, they penetrate into the animal’s body and the wound increases in surface area and deepens in no time, resulting in more flies getting attracted to that side and laying even more eggs, thereby infesting it even further with maggots.

Left untreated, maggot wounds are fatal as the animal may die due to the maggots tunnelling into their brain or vital organs (depending on the site of the wound), blood loss or secondary infections.

Where and how will you see maggots or understand that the animal is infested with maggots and requires treatment?

You won’t see maggots crawling like ticks or lice on the skin surface or hair, instead what you will see is a ‘hole’ in the body of the animal and maggots crawling their way on the wound surface or inside it eating away the flesh and the most potent indicator that an animal has a maggot wound would be that you will smell rotting flesh. This stinking smell will only get worse as the maggots multiply and penetrate through the body of the unfortunate animal.

How to prevent Maggot infestation? 

Prevention is surely better than cure, when it comes to Maggot wounds. Please try to understand that maggot wounds can be fatal/life threatening if not treated on time. Also, note that maggot infestations occur when any small wound on an animal’s body is left untreated and in most cases, that is where it all starts from and especially so in warm, hot and humid weather!

So, if you notice that your neighbourhood street dog/cat/cow/donkey has an open wound, follow the steps below to prevent that wound from becoming infested with maggots:

  1. Clean the wound site with cotton dipped in weak Tincture Iodine solution (this is stronger and works better for wound cleaning in animals). If you cannot procure weak Tincture Iodine solution, please purchase Povidone-Iodine solution (available from your neighbourhood chemist shops under brand names, Betadine, Cipladine or Wokadine etc.). This is followed by outing Nebasulf or Neosporin powder on the wound site. These powders help dry the wound and can be purchased off the local chemist shop as well.
  2. Then to prevent flies from sitting and laying eggs on this wound site, paste a layer of Himax, an ayurvedic veterinary fly/insect repellent, broad spectrum skin ointment (Manufactured by Ayurvet Ltd.) – on top of the wound. Himax ointment has a strong smell and pungent taste, which prevents the animals from licking it. As part of the On-site Street Animal First Aid service that we at JAAGRUTI™ run, we have also applied liberally on the wound site, a layer of another veterinary ointment, Lorexane (Manufactured by Virbac India) to promote wound healing and tissue regeneration and then topping that layer up with Himax ointment. When we choose to mix both ointments and apply them together, then the proportion of Lorexane ointment: Himax ointment was 5:1.
  3. For those of you who think that restraining an animal to clean their wound and apply ointments as directed in Steps 1 and 2 is difficult to execute, then you must consider investing in topical veterinary sprays like D-Mag spray (Manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd.) or Topicure spray (Manufactured by Natural Remedies Pvt. Ltd.), both of which help kill maggots as well as promote wound healing. Alternatively, if sprays are not available, you can invest in veterinary powders with wound healing and maggoticidal properties like Gotbac powder (Manufactured by Scientific Remedies Pvt. Ltd.) or Negasunt powder (Manufactured by Bayer) that can be directly applied on an animal/dog’s open wound.
  4. Please note:
    1. Keep repeating the above steps till the open/bleeding wounds on the animal’s body heal. It is important that we don’t take it easy on this as leaving even the tiniest bit of untreated wound would be an opening for the maggots to creep in and cause ‘destruction’!
    2. All veterinary (i.e. animal-specific) sprays, ointments and powders listed in Steps 2 and 3 above can be purchased only through a pet supplies shop or veterinarian’s clinic only and not at your neighbourhood chemist shop.
    3. Steps 1 to 3 listed above under this section are preventive in intent and will help heal an animal’s open wound and prevent flies from turning it into a horrible maggot wound.

How to treat a maggot infested wound?

Once you spot a wound-hole on the body and smell of rotting flesh in an animal, be rest assured that the smell is of maggots chewing away on the animal’s flesh. Any time wasted hereafter will only increase the maggot wound/infestation in size and prolong the animal’s suffering and pain, please ACT FAST and follow the steps below:

  1. KILLING THE MAGGOTS: The first objective should be to kill the maggots and to do that, we use the following options after restraining/muzzling the animal:
    1. Pour a capful or two of medicinal turpentine oil over the wound site. If the wound is deep seated and the only thing you see is a hole outside, then take this turpentine oil into an empty plastic syringe (without the needle) and then push the Turpentine oil into the ‘hole’. Then just let it act over the next 6-8 hours, as the medicine takes effect, you will either see the maggots popping out of the wound on the floor or large chunks of glued insects/dissolved and held together like blobs of pus coming out of the wound.
    2. However, if you can’t find Medicinal Turpentine oil at the chemist’s shop…then please remember – DO NOT PUT Painter’s Turpentine oil/kerosene oil/petrol/phenyl etc.into the maggot wound. We have noticed that, ignorant of the above fact, a lot of people residing in slums or villages and even otherwise in cities do put all of these into a maggot wound which they should NOT DO; because the sheer toxicity of phenyl, petrol and kerosene can prove fatal and burn the good tissues of the animals, especially in sensitive areas like the head, ear (these chemicals can reach the brain through these organs). So our suggestion is that in case you don’t find Medicinal Turpentine oil, invest in maggoticidal (i.e. maggot killing) veterinary sprays like D-Mag spray or Topicure spray and then place it as close to the maggot wound site and then spray it in hard 4-5 times or even more as required. Doing so will have the same effect as those described above post-application of Turpentine oil. This part of the treatment (Steps 1 a. and 1 b.) will cause pain to the animal, but for their own welfare it is necessary that you use it. Please remember, the burning sensation will pass, but if unattended, the maggots will kill the animal.
  2. REMOVING DEAD MAGGOTS: Check the wound to see if the maggots show signs of life. Even when you think you have removed all the maggots, inspect the inside of the wound thoroughly with a torch. Maggots often create tiny tunnels leading from the main wound deeper into the body of the dog. You may not see the maggots in these tunnels. One giveaway is that the bloody fluid in the hole/holes will appear to be moving, literally “breathing,” if you watch carefully for a few minutes. A common error is not waiting long enough to observe this movement. As a precaution, even when you think you have removed all the maggots, spray the inside of the wound with the D-Mag or Topicure sprays. The pungent Turpentine/eucalyptus oil smell will irritate the maggots and they will start emerging from the tunnel. Once you think they are dead and if you are brave and determined, take a sterile tweezers/forceps to remove/pluck out the dead maggots from the wound. Do remember to clean the tweezers/blunt forceps with antiseptic solutions like Spirit /Savlon/Dettol solution prior to use.
  3. CLEANING THE WOUND: Keep clean cotton wool handy and dip it in weak Tincture Iodine solution or Povidone Iodine solution to disinfect the wound site.
  4. WOUND DRESSING:
    1. Put Negasunt or Gotbac powder into and over the wound.
    2. Next step is to liberally apply Lorexane ointment and layer the wound surface or fill up the hole/wound with this. As stated earlier, in this article, Lorexane cream helps heal the damaged wound site by promoting tissue regeneration, while also keeping the flies away.
    3. The most important step at the end is to apply Himax ointment liberally over the wound site to prevent any more flies from sitting on the wound and re-infesting it further with maggots.
  5. Slowly in a few days, fresh skin will start appearing and the open and wide maggot infested wound will heal and you will be glad that your little effort and investment helped save a life for sure…as maggot infestations don’t go away or cure or heal on their own, human intervention in the ways described above are absolutely essential!
  6. Remember to keep repeating the above steps till the wound heals, with a periodicity of 12-24 hours at the start of the treatment and then every other day till the wound heals and seals itself. Treating maggot wounds requires loads of patience, they don’t heal overnight, so please keep up the good work till the animal has healed completely.

We believe following the above steps does help and over July 2014 to November 2014, as part of the On-site First Aid Service for Street Animals that we at JAAGRUTI™ run in North West Delhi, we have followed the steps detailed in this article to treat on-site (i.e. on the very streets these animals live) 24 animals with maggot infested wounds. This included 2 donkeys and 22 dogs and depending on the severity of wounds, it has taken us 2 weeks to 4 weeks to treat all animals. We have been able to do this only because people from the community, where this maggot infested animal was being treated came forward to handle the animal while our team, was administering treatment; and also ensured that the wounded animal was being fed well to help speed up their recovery. From our end, after doing topical treatment to clean and dress the maggot wound, we were also using assistance from trained veterinary professionals to inject the required dosage of antibiotics, Inj. Ivermectin and multivitamins to kill deep seated maggots, minimise infections and promote wound healing. Please consult your local veterinarian and use tablets and syrups mixed in feed to substitute for injectables.

    • this is the one of the treatment for maggots killing, but you can apply more simply, a two drops of ivomec+tt oil and few drops of pyodyne, by applying this the maggots will die with in 15 minutes.

        As per your description, it is a maggot wound, please buy NEGASUNT VETERINARY Powder or Gotbac veterinary powder and put lots of it OVER and INTO the wound. All maggots will die if you could do this properly even twice.

  4. My dog has two deep wounds holes like I have now since 3days been applying topicure and giving ciplox 500 mg.He does not let me clean the wound as he is very ferocious dog bites I hope his wound gets healed.One more thing does topicure keep flies at bay.

    • It is Himax ointment that keeps flies at bay not Topicure…and once the maggots are inside those holes, it is important that they are all removed/killed…spray D-Mag into those 3 holes..that is more effective than Topicure according to our experience..and spray it directly into those 3 holes, whether or not you give ciplox because ciplox wont help kill them! And killing all maggots is important, so just keep spraying D- mag spray into those holes and applying himax ointment on it…thats it!

  5. Hi, This is Asmita from Kolkata.Your suggestion was awesome.Tried with D’Mag spray and Himax ointment and it turned out to be miracle in killing maggots as well as healing the wound.I have one question.Can applying Hi-Tech/I-Mactine injection on affected dog heals the wound faster?

      • My dog has got maggot infestation in anal area.we took her to the vet and he did all the mentioned procedure and we have been spraying dmag at constant intervals . Does dmag kill the maggots inside effectively ? How much time will it take to heal the wound ? Please help i m very scared as my dog is not well bcs of it . Pls email me .

I would like to ask about how to treat a stray bitch suffering from an infection at the top of her body, having blood all around the infection, where she is unable to touch her tounge also, to cure the wound on her own. I had gone to sanjay gandhi hospital in shivaji enclave and told them about the problem, on which the shop owner over there gave me dermichlor spray. I would like to ask whether this spray would cure the bitch if an infection is maggots. I would also like to inform you that its getting quite difficult for me to run after the bitch to spray, as she runs away after seeing me. Also that she stays very rare at a particular place. If I could get the number of the local doctors nearby who can treat her with expertise. Thanx

    • Dr.Vijay 9810054693 whose clinic is located near Ramesh nagar metro station can help treat the dog for no charge only if you are able to take her to his clinic…only d-mag spray can help and the sprays mentioned in the post above. Dermichlor as the name suggests can only be used to treat skin infections..

    • No, they won’t infect you after coning out, maggots only feed on blood and blood’y tissue that is exposed..just make sure you spray D-mag thoroughly into the dog’s maggot wound twice a day, everyday for a week to 10 days…so that the dog is free of maggots, lest they keep multiplying and kill the poor animal…without your help the maggots won’t die once they have established themselves within an animal’s body. Understood?

  10. hi. my cat’s wound had been infected with maggots. he was bitten 10 days ago. i sprayed topicure on its wound and looks like its working. cant see any more maggots and the wound is healing. but today he had been lazy. possibly because he licked the wound and maggots eggs got in his stomach (i read in a website). can u suggest any medicine? thank you.

  14. 1) Kindly provide information how to avoid fly attack on dog, My LAB is 7 year old, I am cleaning him daily with cloth soaked in 10 ml apple vinegar +bucket of water and bath weekly.
    But then also every week he is attacked by fly and infected with maggots we are using clinical turpentine oil and mixture of (CAMPHOR+TURMERIC POWDER+COCONUT OIL), by this maggot removed and wound get healed quickly, but very next week I can find another new wound somewhere in body with maggot. I read in blog apple vinegar +water keeps fly away but still it’s not working, and place where he stay is complete dry cleaned daily with phenol and water. So please suggest better way to avoid fly attack

    • Use Himax ointment to paste over any of his wounds/already healed maggot wounds, that would keep flies away. Himax is a fly repellant ayurvedic veterinary ointment which is very effective to prevent flies from sitting on wounds.

  15. hii,
    my dash(8 years) has a wound in his anus(its been 2 days), and today i found maggot inside the wound,it have turned into a hole, and he’s crying all day long..I tried spraying Topicure and my vet will not be present till Monday..
    Please help me, i cannot watch my dog being eaten alive. And he will never let me take the maggot out physically or let me spray the TOPICURE into his wound…
    Is there a way to kill maggot with any tablet..I would like to know whether I can buy sedative from chemist and give him so that i can take the maggot physically out.If yes suggest me some names.
    PLEASE HELP……!!!!

    • We have replied to you over the mail long time back…there are no maggot killing tablets, if you cant control your pet and get him treated, no on else can…please take him to a good vet.

  16. hey…thanks for the information. my dog had a wound and poured patrol on it for 2 days, twice a day. lots of small white worm came out. then i saw your blog and stop pouring patrol, have been pouring turpentine oil since and have been spraying tropicure.

    • Please clean wound as advised..spray sone topicure or d mag spray into the hole…then put gotbac powder and top it up with himax ointment which is an ayurvedic fly repellant veterinary ointment that will prevent flies from sitting on the wound and laying more eggs which then hatch open to form maggots or the white worms you saw crawling…don’t ignore the wound site till skin is formed again…the hair growth will be very slow on this site…therefore it will always be a sensitive part of your dog’s body..

  21. I have recently cured by 2 Yrs old labrador from Maggot infestations. Please cut the hair around the wound, give neovac 2ml injection to adult dog and also apply the injection on the top of the wound. 1 Injection with the gap of 2 days is enough. Otherwise It will makes your dog weak. Within hour all maggots and larva will come out and will die. After cleaning the wound with hydrogen Use Betadine Powder and Topicure spray twice a day to prevent flies. You can also give Omnatax Injection to prevent Infection.

  22. It is said that the maggots are cleaners. sometimes used in human medicine, is there a choice of bandaging the wounds and leaving the maggots there? As the maggots are there you know that there is a lot of dead tissue. As dead tissue has no feeling, does this process bother the animal? Please clarify.

      • leave it open after cleaning it up and treating it as described above and just spread a layer of Himax ointment on the cleaned and dressed up wound every time you treat the wound, preferably twice a day. Himax is an ayurvedic fly repellent ointment and will prevent flies from sitting on the open wound and laying more eggs…even if you were to bandage the wound, it has to be redone twice daily else the wound won’t heal till you do treat it in the right manner

    • Thanks Namita. No, Himax doesn’t burn, its odour is pretty potent and is very bad to taste, that’s why dogs hate to lick it clean :) and its very effective to keep the flies away. There is no ointment better than Himax.

My female GSD, gave 4 puppies and recently I noticed there are 5 maggot holes near the Vagina, its very difficult to hold , spray and remove the maggots, i have been doing this since past 3 days. I am spraying twice daily, after I spray, I dont allow the dog to lick for about 20 mins, I dont know when this will get over, I really feel bad for this dog, who also has to take care of its puppies

I am treating a stray dog near my society he got a huge wound around his neck i took him to doctor an he clean up wound and gave 3 injection between 2 days including rabies and he gave me himax, nescorin and mix placentrex gel with gotbac powder and apply once a day .I also giving him ciplox 250 tablet 2 times day ,is that enough or i have 2 do something else?? suggest me any tablet for wound heeling .after how many days his wound will be heel ?there is no maggot now .plz help me

    • Don’t worry. Just put Gotbac powder and Neosporin powder on the maggot wound site and then layer it with Himax ointment. The wound will heal on its own if you keep doing the above step daily, no need to feed antibiotics medicines anymore. Give him multivitamins at best and good food….hair may never cone again on the wound site so it will always remain a sensitive area…keep an eye on this wound site always so that naggots don’t ever happen here again…keep putting little bit of Himax ointment regularly in this area on a precautionary basis.

  29. Read your advise. I found it very educational. One of the stray cats in my building has a open wound on his face so as per the vets instructions i sprayed 0.3ml of ivermectin into tat and within 30 mins the maggots started dyin. The vet gave him and anti biotic shot and asked me to bring him bac in a day or 2 so that the wound cn be cleaned. The problem is this cat is a stray and comes to my house just to eat food. Just wanted to kno is the dmag spray toxic lik ivermectin?

    Please help me out ASAP..
    I have dog Saint Bernard of 11 months, height 30 feet and weight 110kgs, which his got hurt by cutter(blade) while cutting his hairs on his neck beside the ear and i have applied lorexene and T-bat ointment as suggest by vet Dr. But i still don’t find recovering the from the same wound. could please help me out to recover my pet, as i am quiet worried that shouldn’t happen maggots on that but i also prevents him by the flies as keeping in my personal room.
    Your kind help will great for my pet to stay blessed for long life with no harm.

      • Please keep cleaning the wound daily with cotton dipped in weak tincture iodine solution, then apply Nebasulf powder into the wound and then paste mixture of Lorexane and Himax ointment onto it….the wound may take some time to heal depending on how deep it is but your dog will surely heal…not to worry

        As my pet also is facing problem with his maggots on his paws and neck of 4 holes from past 4 days and I did same thing as u mentioned above to people ..
        I have applied initially tropicure spray and then now applying terpiantile liquid, but all maggots are coming out and also we have given injection of Ivermectin and anti biotic inj.
        Can u please suggest me is there any further better treatment to be given for this disease.

Well..I am very about my naplotean mastiff dogs..we found tiny 4 holes near his urinary area..and we can see small white worms..is that maggots??we also took him to a vet he gave flutra tablets nd gave some injection..bt after 2 days also we can notice these holes increasing in size and worms are still appearing..plz reply..urgent..asap

  33. My 1.5 years old female GSD is suffering from attacks by maggots. The wound was in the bottom of the leg and in the thighs of the back leg.The veterinary doctor injected yellow colored medicine in both legs (two days). He cleaned the wound with cotton dipped in Eucalyptus, asked to apply nebasulf powder. we did the the same daily twice. Both the wound are stsrting to cure. There are no maggots left there. But it has spreaded in other places. Three holes the side and one in the stomach bottom and 1 in the tail. we used the same treatement and felt better. Yesterday landed in your page by googling. Going to start using D MAG and HIMAX from tomorrow morning. Any advices please….

  34. Hello.. You provided very useful info for treating maggot infection.. Earlier i used phenol to destroy maggots but recently i bought d mag spray and himax ointmnt for controlling maggot problm. I want to ask is there any substitute of gotbac powder. The vet. shopkeeper said that he is inware of such kind of powder. Moreover i m treating a dog with maggot infection in his ears. I sprayed d mag in his ear from last 2 days. Is dmag spray is enough to finishall the maggots if i conyinue to spray it regularly for a few days. Kindly help

    • D-Mag spray is effective in killing maggots. ..do spray it properly and then press the region around the wound to push maggots into coming out when you repeat this in the evening and do apply himax at the end of the cleaning and spraying exercise, Himax ointment will promote healing as well as prevent more flies from sitting on or aggravating the wound. Alternatively to Gotbac or Negasunt powder (in case you get none), buy Nebasulf powder fron your local chemist shop

        By your wonderful information and by the grace of god, i think all the maggots from the wound is finished. Though i am still spraying the dmag spray twicely on the wound. But it is very difficult to apply himax. Actually the would is inside the ear. I and my father forcefully take the dog in our grip tightly and then apply d mag spray. I spray d mag inside and outside the ear and that foul smell is also considerably reduced. Now i will purchase the powder which you suggested to promote healing. Unable to obtain Lorexane, but i have Kiskin (CLOBETASOL PROPIONATE, OFLOXACIN MICONAZOLE NITRATE & ZINC SULPHATE) I got rid of the maggots by spraying Dmagg and applied himax. now the wound is maggot free. i clean it using Betadine and applied himax, now i am thinking about putting neosporin then kiskin and himax for further healing. the wound is on the back of the neck and it is not big just a spot of about 5mm . please advise me.The dog is a GSD of 3 years. thank you.

  36. Hi…my doag has a big maggot wound near his ear and above his eye. I have got himax, gotbac and topicure. Now my concern is, should I continue spraying topicure till all maggots come out and then only I need to apply the gotbac and himax? or shall I apply all these from day 1 immediately after the spray even if I dont know whether there are any more maggots left inside? Also, what other oral or external medicines should I administer him for faster healing? Please advice…

    • Its important that the maggots are removed first. So continue spraying topicure or D-Mag spray and putting in Gotbac or Negasunt powder. Then when the maggots are removed, also start applying Lorexane or Himax ointment after cleaning the wound and putting in the powders mentioned above.

    My pet 3 year old male has some problem with his left hind leg. The problem is not continuous. At time he has some problem with walking and then becomes normal. But he licks the paws of his legs. I do not see any wounds physically. Does it due to maggot. How to find out whether he is affected by Maggot. Will there be any problem if I use D-Mag spray and the pet is not affected by Maggot. The vet said over phone to use D-Mag spray. But the shop keeper says not to use D-Mag spray until we are sure that it is affected by Maggot. For the time being I am using turmeric power. Kindly advise

    • Clean the wound with cotton dipped in weak tincture iodine solution and then apply Spectrazole anti fungal ointment…but do get it checked by a Veterinary Doctor as well as oral antibiotics or injections would also need to be given to dry the wound up

  41. Thank you so much for this info. It helped me to take care of a severe maggot wound on one of the street dogs of my area. His wound is healing rapidly and from inside out and it is no longer deep. My only concern is that 3 pieces of long muscle/tissue attached to the main muscle are protruding out. I wash his wound with betadine solution (mixed in water) and then apply neosporin powder and finally put himax cream on it. I do this twice daily. Because the maggots are all gone and muscles have grown back on his wound, I no longer use D Mag spray. Please tell me if his skin will be able to grow over these protruding muscles/ tissues or do they have to be removed for the skin to be able to cover the wound area. Also please tell me how long it might take for the wound to fully close.

      If possible, cut off the dead tissue. And after putting Neosporin powder, please apply Lorexane ointment liberally over the wound that would help in tissue regeneration. And then put some amount of Himax ointment over it, just a little…

  43. The best way to treat maggot wound is to apply ivermectin injection and betadine powder on the wound, give 1 ml injection to the dog. You will see the maggot will come out or die within hours and wound will heal in 3 to 4 days.

    My 7 years old dog was growing warts when we left for vacation about 15 days ago. We kenneled him with a vet. When we got back today I found a two inch wound in his ear with grain sized maggots inside. Used turpentine oil and peroxide flush at first go and have started d msg spray in the eve. Covered up the wound with himax and dressed it. I’d be grateful if you could tell me how long these wounds take to heal. And how do I know if his brain has been affected? He’s still eating a little and walking around. No visible pain reaction either and no smell after the flush. Please help. I know iv put my dog through pain cause of neglect.. I’m responsible and guilty.. But I love him and want him to get better. Please advice. How long will he be in pain?

    • Don’t worry, please start putting Lorexane ointment as well. It promotes tissue regeneration. Just make sure all maggots are out of that wound. They wouldn’t have reached the brain if you have acted promptly and all maggots are dead and out. It takes about 2-4 weeks for a small maggot wound to heal. The worse it is when treatment begins the more time it would take for recovery.

      • D-Mag spray contains compounds that are irritating for the maggots. Keep spraying D-Mag till the day you keep getting maggots out of the hole and then for 3-4 days more so that all the maggots seated inside in the tunnels also come out. D-Mag spray and Himax ointment are pungent smelling and that is why your dog is behaving this way plus the maggots inside would also be causing him discomfort. He will be fine as the wound heals. Plus for the warts, to control them and prevent them from increasing, you can try giving him 4-5 drops of Homeopathic medicine Thuja 200 in his water/milk in the morning daily. We give it to one of our dogs too, it is effective and harmless.

  47. My dog Lab has developed a hole beside the nail on 1 St day. I Cleaned him with Hydrogen Peroxide and Betadine. Today I noticed that white maggots in that hole which I removed with forceps. and applied bandage. After reading your article I applied Turpentine oil and also Topicure spray. I could not get lorexane and dMag. The tissue from the claw finger has separated and made a hole. I also noticed a small lesion in another nail of other front leg. I applied the same spray. Should I go for Inj ivermectin or Tablet. Should I keep the wound open? How long should I apply this spray? I also got Himax ointment but could not get the Powde( Gotbac & Negasunt) Instead can I use Neosporin powder.

    • Topical application-You can put few drops of Ivermectin injection or crush a tablet of Neomec and put it on the wound. This will help kill maggots faster. D-Mag spray is better than Lorexane. Put D-Mag spray, if need be bandagefor some time and then put Himax on bandage so that no more flies sit on his wound or on other toenails. You should leave the wound open also after putting D-Mag spray and then put Himax ointment on it. Every dressing clean it with cotton dipped in weak tincture iodine solution or Betadiene solution and then apply spray, powder and ointment as explained above till the wound heals. Yes, Neosporin powder can also be used but not to kill maggots but rather to promote wound healing once all maggots inside the wound are cleaned up.

      • Neomec khilaane se maggots nahi marenge….you have to either crush neomec tablets and put in maggot wound OR better is go buy NEGASUNT VETERINARY Powder or Gotbac veterinary powder and put lots of it into the maggot wound, all maggots will die if you do this step even once properly.     He has got maggots, in both his front legs, at the elbow. Most probably it’s been only a day or two for the maggots.

    I am terribly disturbed because of maggot infestation over the back of my 1 year old lab. I am a human doctor, a surgeon, and I have already used all procedures that we use for maggot infestation in humans. I have used ether solution for maggot removal which doesn’t seem to be working. It has been a week now. I have somehow managed to procure Himax and Topicure spray today. The other products you have mentioned are not available in this town. Please tell me whether I should apply Himax immediately after spraying Topicure or should I wait till the maggots pop out. Also tell me if can use any human medications for dressing or orally. These products are at my ready disposal. I can’t bear to see my pet suffering. Please reply asap as my loss of sleep over my pet’s concern is also affecting my concentration in the human surgeries that I perform.

    • If flies are congregating at a place, it will most likely become a maggot wound. Put a maggoticidal spray on that spot and observe if they come out
      ..else just clean the wound as advised in the article with cotton dipped in weak tincture iodine solution and then apply Lorexane ointment or Himax ointment so that the flies eggs are removed and wound heals. If maggots are there, they will not be killed by weak tincture iodine solution.

    ‘D-Mag spray followed by Negasunt powder’ for the street dog i told you about her suffering with maggot infestation. She was suffering with maggot infestation for 8 days and every day the whole was going deep and deep, i was really confused about the medicine, if would it work, but finally it works. I used D mag each day two times and the negasunt powder one time in the night time when the dog generally goes to sleep after dinner, though it is a street dog, but i arranged a little shelter for her at my own home corner. After applying Dmag spray i realized that the itching is gone and and few larva came out automatically jumping from the whole. Though, i used 500 mg human capsule almox 500 each day one capsule for 5 days for drying inside, and now she is absolutely fit.     • The problem is his maggot wound is not healing properly. Keep applying ointment like Lorexane on his wound every day till that skin hardens/gets hair after you have got the maggots removed this time. Don’t ignore the wound.

    Thank you for this information. It has been really helpful.
    There is a street dog near my gym and I used to pet him daily. He has a little wound. But I wasnt aware of maggots and its infestation. So when I saw his wound becoming bigger rather than healing I asied someone who knew about dogs and realised he was infected with maggots. The wound is on his back and I have been using D mag spray along with betadine and himax cream. When I sprayed the worms were coming out. I cleaned them with a cotton and applied both creams. I will be doing this till his wound doesnt heal properly.
    Kindly let me know if this is enough. Do I need to do something else as well?

    • Keep spraying D-Mag into the wound and when you repeat the step in the evening even press area around the wound, it is important to get the dead maggots out if there as well. Also see if you can buy Negasunt powder and put that into the wound as that too kills maggots. You can then put Lorexane ointment and Himax ointment on the wound to seal it and prevent more flies from sitting on it.   59. I used the D-Mag spray twice & it helped immensely. The pungent smell got most of the maggots out (but it was like opening a can of worms. Wasn’t prepared for it, but still survived to tell my story). Thanks for the advice. I clean the wound twice everyday in the following order: clean the wound with Betadine Solution, apply Negasunt dusting powder, apply Lorexane & Himax ointment but today I realised that my dog (female) is limping in her rear foot. Has it got anything to do with the wound or should I directly consult a vet? Please advise at the earliest. Thanks & A BIG GOD BLESS to ur entire team.

      Replace Negasunt powder with Nebasulf powder if the wound is now clean of maggots. Where was the maggot wound? In the foot? If its just a sprain, cure it with Melonex syrup (1ml per 10kg of body weight for 3-4 days ONLY mixed in diluted milk )

Her young one who is about 5 months has developed an allergy due to which he itches his body. I did show him to a vet & was advised a tab of Wysolone 5mg & since there was no effect told to start with half a tab of Neomec. It been some weeks now but the problem still persists.       • Neomec is a strong medicine. Give 1/2 tablet of it every 7 days only. Never ever give it daily. Wyzolone is a steroid, it helps i reducing pus based inflammations won’t help in relieving itch. Try Anti -allergic tabs like Cetrizine instead and give him multivitamin syrups daily to boost his immunity

    I look after about 180 street dogs and as such am quite well versed with ways to treat maggot wounds, and have seen and dealt with hundreds in the last 8 to 10 years. Have been following the same protocol as you have suggested with one difference: I follow it up with an antibiotic to heal the wound.
    Also at times I have given the animal a dose of Neomec as I read somewhere that Neomec kills the maggots. I am aware of the fact that this medicine is strong so I like your idea( which I read in response to somebody’s query) of crushing a tablet and putting it on the wound.
    The slums bordering our colony have a lot of maggot infested dogs would it be possible for you to come here to do on the spot treatment Atleast once. We can follow it up after that. Thanks a ton

    This site has been really helpful for me earlier. I could help a maggot infested stray because kf the tips provided here.

    That is why I turn to you again. A stray near my hous has just delivered puppies. Just a day before delivering she got into a fight with another dog and got injured. She has bite holes on the back of her body where she cant lick them and they sometimes bleed. Even though she is friendly she doesnt let me touch her and doesnt stand still even for a second rolling on the floor or scratching herself on some wall. How do I prevent her wound from maggots since there are a lot of flies sitting on her?

    • Apply topical medication like Negasunt powder to kill maggots if any when she is distracted by food or else just dry the wound by somehow sprinkling Nebasulf powder or Neosporin powder on those wounds. Oral medication should not be given without consulting a doctor as she is lactating.

    A scooter ran over one of the legs of a puppy in my neighborhood. There is no blood but her leg has swollen up and she is in pain. I don’t know the degree of the accident since I wasnt present there.

    Is there something I can do even though I cant see an exterior physical injury?

  68. I found and joined your site because I found my black lab dog infested with maggots yesterday. This was a severe case and we had her put down. She was our pet for 13 years, but had been doing well. She did have a tumor on her anus that our vet had stated if they operated could make her lose bowel control function. So we opted to leave it alone. She had lived with this tumor for 6 years. Last week she had gotten diarrhea, which burned her skin surface attracting flies. She was shedding hair also and had a patch of hair that we were still working to get off of her, but she hated being brushed, so it was a little at a time. I was bathing her because of the surface burn wound. But the maggots infested most of her back under this patch of matted hair and got into her anus. So the bathing may having contributed to the moisture attracting an environment the flies used to deposit eggs. I used peroxide per the vet’s advice as it would foam and help release the maggots as I pulled them off. But she had holes eaten into her that were tunneling. Until pulling away the hair, you could not see or know that it was there, let alone so bad. She was in a lot of pain, I felt/feel so terrible. Awful. I had no idea and had never heard of dogs dying from maggots. I thought flies just bit ears making bite wounds like that. So very much appreciate your information posted here in helping me understand all of this. Thank you.

Maggot wounds can never be healed through Hydrogen Peroxide. And maggot wounds heal fast if treated in time and correctly.       • My Vet did not know I had found more than one spot of maggots when I called. My dog had an appointment to see the vet the same day. In fact when I first called I said she had a skin infection that appeared spreading, because all I could see was a patch where the hair was gone by her anus, and that she was crying in pain. When the Vet saw her he sounded upset that I had not told him that she had so many maggots. When I called to find out what to do about the maggot, I had only found one spot, he said to, “Check her whole body.” Well I did that and found nearly 1/3 of her body was infested under thick hair. He said the peroxide would bubble and make them come loose and help them come out. Since he was seeing her that day, it seemed sufficient for getting them off temporarily.
        It has been a rough few days for me, wake up at night with the images of he being eaten. And realize she is gone. Thanks for your support.

      • Your vet did not suggest you the right thing, unfortunately. and for us this is sad how vets con their clients. Anyways, we suggest you now invest your energy saving dogs from maggot wounds or as many other animals as you can, rainy season is a horrible season…your girl would be happy if she sees you saving more lives :) that’s how we pay back our pets and that is what Jaagruti is all about too.

  72. I’m so glad I found this page. I have been trying to take care of an abandoned Beagle near my house. Took him to the vet today and realized he had a maggot infestation. He is 4 years old and just 8 kilos. In extremely poor health.

    Our vet is brilliant and did the same as this blog post details. He has told us to come for two more days to follow up the treatment. I’m hoping the dog gets well and gets a foster home soon.

  73. I found a 2-week indian pariah pup just yesterday evening near my home infested with maggots on the elbow of his front-right leg. His condition was so worse that it brought tears to my eyes.
    I surfed the net regarding its treatment and luckily found your page. I had no time to wait for another day to take him to the vet. I followed every step you suggested…. from flushing it with water to disinfecting it with betadine solution.
    Sorry, I couldn’t find any medicinal turpentine oil. I had to move forward with the next steps. Luckily, the pup was very cooperating and made very less to no noise… as if it wanted me to clean away his wound.
    After applying Betadine solution, the maggots came out of the holes they were in.
    I had to pluck them out with a blunt eyebrow picker. I almost removed every maggot I could reach.
    The only doubt I have is that….. I saw a couple of maggots deep in the flesh near the shoulder bones which I couldn’t reach with the picker.
    After that I flushed the wound with more betadine solution… then I put generous amount of neosporin ointment on his wound and spread it inside it with a cotton swab. By that time the pup calmed down very much, showing no signs of pain. Then I mixed some drops of betadine solution with turmeric powder to make a paste and applied it on his wound to seal it off from further infestation by flies.

    I don’t know if its coincidence or something else that I found him on the day just before Ganesh Chaturthi. I just treated his wounds a couple of hours ago and now I’m writing this message to you.

    It would be very helpful of you if you could clear my doubt, whether leaving a maagot or two in the unreachable part can hamper the treatment anyway.
    Though I’ll be taking him to the vet in the evening today, I just don’t want his condition to detoriate.

  74. I couldn’t find D-mag or Topicure spray with my local chemist… also he didn’t have Negasunt or Nebasulf or Gotbac powder but suggested me Betadine powder. I wasn’t sure of it so didn’t get it…though I got Medicinal turpentine oil and it really worked wonder….within minutes of its application maggots came out of the wound which I removed with the plucker…..
    I also bought Ivermectin tabs but don’t know how to administer it to the pup….the chemist asked me not to use ivermectin injctn. as it could have side-effects since the pup was just close to 2-weeks old… instead asked me to crush these tabs , mix it with water and them spray it into the wound with a syringe.
    Will this method be effective against the maggots???
    I just don’t want the maggots to re-infest the poor soul again ever….
    Please help me….

It happed once with me in childhood when I was 8. Can we make him unconsious before treating him if yes then how. And can we use pain killers before treating him….???   76. I just applies few drops of turpentine oil on the maggot wound near the anus of a small street pup who have just opened his eyes. It started to scream loudly and continually..it is not even feeding milk.. I am very afraid that it may die of pain.

    I tried to wash up the area with water but didn’t work. .. please help what to do as it have been 2 hours since its screaming

  77. Thanks for this information!. I have an adopted dog who has wounds on her back due to dog bites. The wounds were healing perfectly fine when i spotted a small whole in one of them (probably 5mm). Thought i saw something move and on closer inspection was shocked to see 10-20 small larvae. Followed your instruction and removed everything i could see after applying betadine, then sprayed D-MAG , I saw a few more maggots coming out, so removed them and filled the hole with GotBac, Redid this procedure after 3/4 hrs and got a few more maggots out. I repeated the procedure in the morning and i dont see any maggots this time. Can i assume that they are all out?. Or is it possible that there are still some eggs waiting to hatch?. Is there a chance that it would have spread already?. I will continue to repeat this for another 3 days anyway. Thank you!

  81. I have purchased a German Shepherd pup from a kennel. The pup was delivered to when he was three months old. I did notice that the joint of his hind legs appear to be loose. The breeder gave me to understand that this condition would become fine as the pup grows. Now he is six months and the condition has not improved. I am giving him Calcium and Multi-vitamins. Hello I have a3years old lab she got an injury at anal ,later it turned as a hole and we shown it a vet he treated with penciline injection and suggested to spray topicure first 3days we can’t found any maggots after spraying topicure suddenly about 5-10 maggots appeared on the floor.today I seen it article and injected medicinal turpentine oil through syringe and sprayed topicure both after 2-3 hours the white puss is coming out from the hole the hole is smaller we can’t see anything inside now vet doc saying the white puss is maggots. Plz clarify 1.it is that puss is maggots?
    2.can we use both the turpentine oil and topicure at a time ? Is it not harmful
    3.Penciline injection may kill maggots or not ..plzz give an advice..and one thing initially we wouldn’t found any wound after 3days the turned as a hole we found now the maggots are about 1/2(half) inch in length..is tat white puss is maggots..plz clarify me

    A stray pup just outside our house has a small wound hole just around the neck area infested with maggots.
    After reading this article,i bought topicure spray and sprayed into the would and maggots either died inside the wound hole or just dropped out of it.With a plucker dipped in dettol,i took out 14 maggots out of the hole.
    And now I have applied cipladine to the wound.
    and also given the pup an injection of Ivermectin.
    Puppy is better now.

  89. There is a street dog in my locality. I think any dog has bitten him. He has a hole on his leg. I don’t know whether maggots are there or not. I have applied Betadine 2-3 times on his wound. He is really fond of me but he does not let me apply any medicine and now when he sees cotton in my hand he runs away. I don’t know how to help him. But he can lick at that place.     • Why don’t you read the article properly? Betadiene won’t help if there are maggots in the hole. Put Negasunt veterinary powder or D-Mag veterinary spray into the hole immediately. Act fast before the situation aggravates.

My Dog Australian Shepherd 6 1/2 year old has infected his right ear from maggot .It had been wholly eaten up how sedate him as he don’t give me to touch his ear as he tried to bite me , applying d-mag spray from last 5 days but no sign of recovery any internal medication for drying wound up ,taken to vet the vet has given some medicine given with food a large amount of maggots came out from his ears how to be sure that he has no other maggots in his ears . This is extremely helpful but in my case a bit to late I had a samoyd which was put to sleep tuesday due to maggots , tuesday morning I’d come down stairs and noticed maggots on the floor has he moved I’d seen more so I rang rspca straight away they told me to take him down which I did the vet said we need to sedate him to shave his fur as it was a bit matted ( he like to sit out in the rain and mud ) once sedated she shaved the area and just said he needs to be put down she didn’t try anything else . Could there of been anything else she could of done first? I’ve now got the rspca wanting to question me I’ve no idea why .

    • Please buy Negasunt veterinary powder or Gotbac powder instead and put it on the wound liberally while he eats food or something. Spray will scare the dog away and sting him..the powder won’t and this powder will kill all maggots too

But the problem tends to arise after 1 or 2 months. Isn’t there any long term solution to this problem . Is there any area where I fail to apply the right action?

I have seen a street dog in my lane who has got maggot wound earlier it was a wound which he used to lick often but now i saw today that there is a hole on his back. Though he licks it every time but i feel his tongue is not reaching into the hole that is why maggots must be there… so i will buy D-Mag or Topicure spray as adviced by you…but also suggest any medicine for oral intake to expedite healing process.

Share a photo of the wound with us on firstaid@jaagruti.org and we will suggest you oral medication once you have put these powders. Sprays tend to scare dogs away..so buy the powder and put them instead

      • Going forward keep applying the spray daily till the wound seals…make sure you clean that white fluid or pus coming out of the wound (those are dissolved maggots and dead tissue)….do not apply turpentine oil anymore..if possible invest in Lorexane veterinary ointment

First of all thank you for this wonderful article.There was a 5 week old street puppy in our locality who had an open wound on one of his hind legs.We sprayed D-mg on his wound and took out dead maggots(50 approx),put neosporin and closed up his wound with bandage so that it stays clean from debris.After continuing this for 10 days the wound closed up a lot but now he has a massive pus just above the wound on his leg where the skin has closed up.Can you suggest some appropraiate steps to combat this?

Will the wound heal up. Poor dog was neglected. I want to see it heal and want to give to someone. Coz I have 3dogs already, this one doesn’t mingle with the group. Kindly advise

    My 2 years old female labrador (abuse rescued) unexpectedly got pregnant and gave birth to 7 cherubs but unfortunately attacked by maggots on the anal area. After spraying D-mag the tiny white monsters are crawling into her anus. I hope this is no worry. Anyways, now I am considering to get her ivercotmin* shots.

    One of the baby also got infected but following your procedure, she/he is recovering super fast, thanks again. But, now I am more concerned about the mother as it’s on her sensitive parts. I will get her ivercotomin injections as she gets panic about the spraying procedure on her sensitive parts.   132. Hello, There is a stray dog in my area who has a bad skin problem. In April this year I managed to catch her and send her to an NGO. She had hitek injections and was much better. It is now October and her skin problem is back again. She has blood at the end of her ears and a little on top of her head. I am worried about maggots.   134. My pet dog is an Indian dog. We rescued him as a pup from the street. Now he is nearly 14 years old. 4 days ago his eyes were irritating him and it was watery. Today I noticed many maggots(5 mm-8 mm long) wriggling in his eyes. How can I remove them? I tried removing some with a cotton cloth, but maggots are going into the tissue, popping in and out.

    My 7 year old Saint Bernard ‘s right ear has been smelling for a week. I thought that they were smelling because he needed a shower but when the smell returned after I gave him a bath I decided to take him to a vet.

    The vet diagnosed the ear as maggots-infested. He didn’t look inside my dog’s ear, but said that it smelled of a maggot infestation. He has asked me to bring my dog to the hospital for the maggot removal procedure empty stomach (as my dog will need to be sedated for it). He also prescribed topicure and some antibiotics.

    I checked my dog’s outer ear thoroughly today and saw no sign of maggots (just some wax and traces of an ear cleanser that I’ve been using to clean his ears). Is it possible for the maggots to be in the ear canal (middle ear) and not on the outer ear?

    I’m just worried about sedating my dog, as he hasn’t responded well to that in the past. I would appreciate any of your insights and thoughts on his case, because it is difficult to get good second opinions where I live. Thank you so much, and keep up the great work, it helps so many of us animal parents.

  144. Hello. In my experience with maggots on my dog, I didnt have any of these medications. So I applied tons of vasselin to the affected area(this will suffocate the maggots) then covered the area with cotton wool and bandaged him up. I also had to make a makeshift cone for him so he doesnt kick off the vasselin and unravel the bandage.
    Now I’m waiting for the vet to come and see him and apply all the proper meds.
    This really helps guys and it’s all I can do to help max for now. I will update you on his progress.

  148. EMERGENCY …….I took a stray dog to a Vet…. He had a big open hole in his neck side 4 days….just below oesophagus area and infested with maggots. The vet is serving in a Vet college.. I.e looks experienced..
    —He put cotton swabs Dipped in probably Phenol.. Aka. It was Phenyl smelling brown color substance and sutured the wound to hold the Cotton swabs.
    Is it ok??
    Vet said to cut the sutures the next day so that the maggots die. He also gave ciprofloxacin tablets and Scavon spray of Himalaya. We are feeding the dog only eggs and milk and water.

    i could find d-mag spray but no powders. also got himax ointment.
    the dog am using it on, is a stray dog but has been around for few years now and so allows me to spray on the wound and then apply ointmnet. i tried cleaning the wound with betadine solution. but it’s just first day for me and the pus-liquids are stil ozing out of the wound. not sure i can help with any other medications or treatments. also am not sure how deep the infestation is. please do suggest if i can use tables or other injection, as the dog is bit weak yet active … doesn’t eat much. if anything else can help the recovery.

  160. The stray dog who had been hit by a vehicle and has been limping for 2 days..
    Informed blue cross and doctor asked me to give wysolone 20mg for 5 days because it’s inflammation..
    Today is day 2 and there is no improvent in dog back leg.
    Could you please suggest if We are going in right direction?

    I have found a dog near my home and he was having a small hole in his neck.
    When i checked his hole carefully with torch i saw some small white blackish colored worms type moving in it. And some water type pus coming out.
    For now as it is night time i was not able to do much just applied some haldi and betadine
    But i would need to know if this is maggots..shall i buy d-mag spray and apply on the area as told above
