Animal Helplines in Mumbai

Since the intention of the Jaagruti helpline service is to guide people who are willing to help animals, we request those of calling us from in and around Mumbai to please refer to the contact lists below, to identify which organisation/rescue agency is nearest to the location where you wish to get medical aid for an animal in need. Since all these organisations run on contribution made by people like you, please do try to contribute your bit. Have some patience to wait for the ambulance service till it arrives, please try to comfort the animal in need and provide the animal first aid, food and shelter till the ambulance arrives, you know how traffic is in our cities, don’t you?

Just merely calling and screaming for help on an animal helpline service to call for an ambulance won’t help, try doing your bit for the bird/animal in need too. Do try to remember, “Hands that help are far better than lips that pray“…

If there are any corrections you can point out please e-mail the same to contact@jaagruti.org

Great work, I am extremely pleased to find this site.
    God help you all.

    Further my question is:
Can a Housing Society Charge Rs. 500.00 per month for keeping pet dog at home ?? is it legal ??

    Like

    • Hi Rakesh,
No, its not right for a Housing Society to do this, it is in contravention to your constitutional rights as a citizen of India. We have replied to you on the email as well in depth. Please check your mail. Thanks.

    • Dear Team,

I am facing similar problem, our society members have forcefully passed resolution during General Body Meeting They have passed a resolution charging pet owners Rs 1000/- per pet on monthly basis. They are using this money to hire House keeping staff in two shifts. Inspite of all the pet owners confirming that they would comply with all the rules. They have not agreed. We need your help

As per Bombay High court directive , housing societies cannot deny it claim any right of animal. I assume that would be not charging any extra charge.

  3. hey just a quick question.. do these animal welfare centers help in rescuing a snake from someone’s house as well? and what if a person lives in malad and wants to get a venomous snake rescued.. would the welfare members come all the way from dadar or navi mumbai to rescue a snake? if no then where should a person living in malad call to rescue the snake??

    Like

    • Yes, please call them and they will put you in touch with the organisation or rescuers in Mumbai near your area who could come over, trained in rescuing a venomous snake….please be patient, don’t get disheartened if you have to call a few numbers to coordinate this or any other animal rescue effort..persistence pays

I have been feeding and giving treatment to street dogs by consulting animal doctor at thane. but when i see the rickshaw fellows drive fast and don’t realise that the dogs also get pain if they hurt them. they don’t even slow down their speed if the animal is on the way, this hurts me a lot. is there any way that can be adopted to bring awareness in them to know about the pain of other living beings.

    • You should take her to a good vet near your place, she would need personal attention as she is now ‘old’ as well for a dog. Contact PAWS Thane or Bombay SPCA to see if they can refer any good vets or affordable hospitals in the city as we are based out of Delhi and wont know much on this. And if she is not eating, you need to immediately get her blood tests done and get her administered Glucose. We wish her a speedy recovery.

I will have to check with the legal cell of IIT B if they could allow stray pups from our campus to be adopted by people outside. If yes and if you are interested then please mail me on shsorathiya at yahoo dot co dot in. I will mail you the collage of photogrphs that we made for the “Dog adoption campaign”.
Also, help us spread the word. We are based in Powai, Mumbai.

    • Mam, your dog is very old at 13 years of age, she won’t be able to survive at a shelter, so please don’t consider putting her in any of them, where she is most likely to die of depression in a few weeks if not days. As for finding her a new home, not many would adopt an old dog. Please consider keeping her with you or putting her to sleep peacefully.

  10. We have a serous problems with dogs in our area. My husband comes back on a bike late from work and is chased and bitten by these dogs. I myself am a dog lover but I am unsure what to do in this case. Sterilization does not really help. a couple of dogs were not sterelized last year and they had a litter , which ahve grown and now all those dogs are also not sterelized. They are becoming a menace. Could you provide a solution

    Like

    • If you are a dog lover, then surely these dogs wont be barking at your husband or chasing him. Try petting these dogs, making friends with them, may be your husband can carry a pack of biscuits with him and feed them every night…and not drive the bike too fast. Also, as a dog lover, please take the initiative to get these dogs sterilized 100%, leaving even one female dog unsterilized defeats the purpose. Dont call them a menace if you actually love them, doesnt suit you.

    • Mam, pups wont make it for long even at the shelter, as they will contract infections there owing to their low immunity. Please consider getting them vaccinated instead and letting them be on the street, and the healthiest and luckiest of them all will surely survive and Please do get/make the effort to get all other dogs in your areas sterilized, so that you dont have to bear such agony again.

    • No Sir, there are no such places where the cats can be taken care off the way a family does…in a shelter they will be subjected to a life in a cage and would give up soon due to depression and loneliness. Kindly reconsider your decision of abandoning your pet cats. Thanks

  13. I incessantly complained to a number of dog welfare centres, like Karuna, Manav Mandir, Asha,Ahimsa, IDA, about an injured pup in Borivili. To my utter surprise, none of the above blinked an eyelid to help the said stray. These NGO’s I guess are only money making bodies

    • You may try taking the pup to a nearby vet on your own Sir, no point blaming anyone..for blaming wont help the pup in any way. You may check with Welfare of Stray Dogs in Mumbai on the nearest good vet you could take the pup to. Often, pups dont survive for long in shelters as they contract infection owing to their low immunity at young age, and that often ends up being the reason that pup rescue calls are left unattended at times.

    • I had faced the same attitude from many of these centers. I had called a few of them to ask for help rescuing a stray cat that had been in an accident, and the answer I received was “sorry madam, the case is not so important”…I’m currently taking care of the cat myself and admitting him in a animal hospital but living alone and already having two cats, I have no space for him after he is better. I am really disappointed in the NGOS, and yes Jagruti..you are right, blaming will not solve anything. But in my case it’s not blaming, I wish to inform people not to waste their time, and the animal’s precious little time on these very unhelpful centers.

    • Sir, you may check with the local wildlife department staff if they have any parakeet requiring rehabilitation with a family for life, owing to the bird’s inability to fly ever again in life….the reason we are advising you to do the above is because the Indian rose ringed parakeet is otherwise a protected species under the Indian wildlife protection act of 1972 thus making it illegal to keep it as a pet.

The only response i get is to wait for the cat to get injured and only then can you’ll help .. Totally disgusted calling this service .. The people are too busy having their lunch to do any work based on my conversation .. So lets wait for the cat to jump and injure itself upon which “Rescue Helpline” authorities like you can act upon .. Great Job!!

  36. Hello,

A parrot came over to our balcony, and has been with us since then. we have not caged it. It used to fly around the locality to other’s balconies too but come over every evening to sleep at our place. Everyone in the locality enjoyed its company for 3 months.

3 days back (31st Aug 2013) one of the families caught the parrot in the cage.
We went to them and requested to release it. but they refused. when we threatened them with police action they promised to release it. but said their daughter wants to be with it for some more time. so we accepted it and left their place.

That very evening (1st Sep 2013) the kids came and informed us that those guys were taking away the caged parrot somewhere in an autorickshaw.

Now we dont know where they took the poor bird. but we are sure they have not released it.

They had borrowed the cage from a friend and mostly have given the cage and parrot to that friend.

Can anyone help. We are very heartbroken. the kids were really very attached to the free bird and have not been able to handle the loss.

    Location: Borivali (west), Kasturpark.

    • Just a suggestion: get it treated first as that is the need of the hour..thats what the hospitals are for..and then consider finding the kitten a home by posting adoption appeals through volunteer networks of groups like AMTM Mumbai or PAWS Thane…because you are asking NGO run hospitals to take care of kitten for life, they are resisting you. .just get it admitted in one of them for treatment

      • Yes, I did that. From 20 Nov to 24 Nov I was in private vets clinic almost everyday, without waiting for any NGO.
Aren’t the NGO’s supposed to help in treatment? AMTM has proudly displayed on FB its new centre and facilities and yet for my stray he had no place. Why? AMTM, ALAS, ASHA, SPCA all refused TREATMENT not permanent residency.
Anyway my kitten is no more. And I got help on her last day from people who are thankfully not part of any NGO.

  59. Good directory of animal helpline numbers. But, feeling sad as none of these numbers could help us tonite. There was an abandoned cow outside my building at Mira Road. She was pregnant and was finding it difficult to walk may be because of her weight or an injury. It was unusual for me as have never seen any cow in my area. She was surrounded by dogs barking at her due to which she was moo’ing repeatedly. I was getting restless seeing her this way and was afraid if she deliver a baby, so decided to do something. Called up just dial and tried to get contact no’s of local animal activist but all of the no’s shared by just dial were unanswered. Found more no’s on your site but all unanswered, may be because it was 12.30 at night. Finally, i called up my friend and went out to see if any local tabela wala could help us in this. Even tabelawala was not ready to take responsibility of the cow as he was unsure whose cow it was and said she has lost her way. I am really disappointed that there isnt a single 24*7 no. for such animals. The entire scene has happened between 12.30 am to 2.30 am tonite and i am feeling very sad as i am unable to help her and she is still low’ing outside.

Please contact the Mumbai based organisations yourself, as we can’t force anyone to take them in, since they already have too many street animal cases to tend to. They are not boarding homes is what you need to understand. Else, do your cats a favour before parting ways with them, just get all your cats sterilized and let them be free.

It could be maggots affected wound (check whether the wound has swelling and rotten smell) if so, use either D-MAG SPRAY or GOTBAC POWDER or TOPICURE SPRAY on the wound and from next day onwards for about 5 days administer BETADINE paste on the wound. if you wait for any hospital to treat the dog, the time wasted will worsen the wound, moreover you have to spend between 50 to 70 rupees only on these two medicine. you will get the satisfaction of saving a life.

    • This is grossly illegal, the Society cannot do it, refer to this circular http://www.awbi.org/awbi-pdf/Pet_dog_circular.pdf. Slap a notice on your Society. You can seek guidance from Nilesh Bhanage at PAWS Thane 982016114. Do not, under any circumstance, bow down to the pressures being imposed on you to “abandon”your pets. That is cruel and in contravention to the national laws.

      • the point is nt abt steriliztn, main thing is he barks so loudly n some tyms also chases unknw ppl,he had bitten 2-3 ppl as they ran out lukin at him.so they decided to hand him to KDMC is there any way to make him clam?

        Like

      • Sterilisation helps calm the dogs down and then there are calming medicines also which a vet can prescribe

        Like

      • And also KDMC would not pick up a sterilized dog. ..that’s why it is important that you get him sterilized. Will email you an awareness leaflet, use that to educate your neighbourhood as to how to behave around dogs…if the neighbourhood still hurts the dog, request PAWS Thane to send them a warning letter. That’s how you will help the dog and yourself

    • Pratiksha, you are on the correct side of the law by having a license for your Pet. What those guys have done is “criminally intimidating a women” which is a punishable cognisable offence under the Indian Penal Code. Report it to the Police next time it happens or even now on the incident that has already happened with you.

Book an AC first class coach and take him with you…abandoning a pet is the most cruel thing to do, he will just die in the shelter and not live happily or peacefully post abandonment as you ‘dream off unwisely’…and when he dies remembering you in loneliness, you will be cursed forever

  102. Hello

We have a stray dog in our campus (IIT Bombay Powai) who was very friendly and active, but has suddenly lost a lot of weight. All bones can be seen through the skin. He seems weak and staggers while walking. There is eye booger around his eyes like humans get during fever. We have been feeding him (egg, milk, biscuits, pedigree) regularly since the past one week. He eats a moderate amount and drinks water but he does not seem to be gaining any weight, and the weakness is there since one week. I also gave him a deworming tablet suspecting worms, but it does not seem to have helped. His skin looks otherwise healthy. Can we get veterinary help/advice on how to treat this dog? Any links or contacts of vet NGOs who might be willing to check up?
    I appreciate your advice. Thanks.

They said its not their job (disgusting). They gave another number 9619933223 (Another NGO). This time answer was its not in their locality so call the previous number. Again i called Karuna-NGO, this time gave another number 9820127085 (Asha Madam who runs an NGO), She also replied that its not her job. I cant understand what should be done. Feel like complaining the police and somehow get their license revoked. They just run NGO’s for money. Please advice ??????

    • Sir, NGOs working for animal welfare do have staff and vehicle related resource crunch and thus give such responses at times. We suggest you tell them you would be happy to contribute towards the cat’s treatment and perhaps they will come over. Often callers think its the NGOS job to come over when they call and the government pays NGOS to do this work, the answer is NO, Government pays zero and the NGOS stretch every penny they get as contributions from a few while the rest don’t understand the limitations such organisations work in and just malign them…you also have the option of getting the cat treated through a privatr vet in your neighbourhood

  119. Hi – wanted to know how is the stray dog issue tackled as of now. There is a serious issue of stray dogs in our society and it puts children at risk – what is the suggested approach?

    Like

    • One can only request the Municipality or nearest Animal hospital working on the Dog Birth Control programme to sterilize and vaccinate dogs in your area. Plus do educate kids on behaving (Do’s and Dont’s) around dogs and other animals. The above is in accordance with Animal Birth Control Rules (2001) enacted under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of India

  128. When you are feeding the dog, the dog must be manageable by you, so you should immediately take the dog by any vehicle to nearby vet. Please apply Himax or betadine for first aid. But the vet or SPCA is the right person to tell you about the proper treatment

The mother and the kittens inhabit the top floor staircase and cause a very strong stench in the staircase as they urinate & poop in th staircase. While I acknowledge the issue of this stench affecting residents, my thoughts are about saving the litter & the mother from angry residents. Please guide and let me know if there are cat lovers who would want to adopt these cats.

This been a month but wanted to share one such good work with you , I saw one of our street dogs whom we daily feed with biscuits was missing . we searched and found him in very bad condition (almost about to die) with a wound on shoulder. Instantly we called PAWS and they helped him getting cured.
After 10 -12 days with frequent follow up , we got a call that he is coming back to our area. The moment he saw us , he was full of joy and started jumping around with happiness… playing with other dogs and kids…
That moment is the best ever in his and our life too..He almost came back from death…

I just shared this after reading few comments of people in negative aspects.
I would say try help them once , love them care them , they are a part of our society.

There is an injury below her one eyes as you can see in the pic which is infecting her eyes too. I applied pendistrin tube on her injury but in every 2 days blood comes out from it. So called an NGO vet, he came & checked her. Vet gave her injection & told me that she is old & have tumor, biospy is needed to be done. And they also told that he have moti in her eyes which is also need to be treated otherwise it will burst. They do on-spot treatement & dont have such facility. Then i have spoken to IDA but now they dont do surgery. Neighbours are not co-operative to pick the dog & i cant pick the dog alone & go to the hospital. Dog is still scared of humans, she dont like to be touched. Whenever i touch her head she go away. Kindly advice what should i do?

Kya ye organizations realy stray dog ko help karti hain?
Jo bi contact details diye hain unme se kisika bi number nai laga.ek Spca ka laga magar wo navi mumbai me operate nahi karte.

There is a street dog,who requires help.He is in a lot of pain. And people like me who want to help have so many constraints. There is no good vet i have come across in navi mumbai atleast, who realy wants to help them. They only want to make money,i even doubt if they are actualy vets.
I dont even feel safe taking my dog to these vets. Iam not someone who cribs but i feel so helpless there is no one to help.
I mean people dont care about other humans why would they care about poor animals.

Iam broke from inside.i tried calling all the numbers.no help. That poor dog will suffer so much.I dont know what to do. Iam in navi mumbai only for few days.i have to take my mother to hospital regularly.my dog is not keeping well.
And when i just wanted to help this little dog i dint find any organization to take of it.

Please help if you can.Give any number ,iam in kamothe navi mumbai.
I can just spend some money on him but koi use thik to kare.
Koi hai jo sirf paiso k alawa sach me wants to help these little kids (dogs).

God please help.or dont make people like me helpless.

Will you do this with your kid.pets are also our kids and don t look at them as an entertainment object
