-We invite your queries, despite not having all the answers because, sometimes picking up the phone and talking to someone or penning down your queries/concern over the e-mail is the best way forward. It helps one put our thoughts and feelings in words, declutters our thought process and helps us think ahead more clearly. ANIMAL HELPLINES IN THE CITY-DELHI & NCR

*Please note (update as on 3rd June, 2010 till present) : Regarding Circle of Animal Lovers, Neb Sarai, Saket-Delhi. This NGO been served a show cause notice by Animal Welfare Board of India and MCD in view of the string of complaints and inspection reports received against their functioning and ABC Work, so in the best interests of animals and their well-being, it is advised to all of you to refrain from using their services for either dog sterilization work or any other animal work till they come out clean.

***Also, please BEWARE of this private shelter/dog boarding run at Sector 25, Rohini and near Alipur Bypass Area/Deep Vihar-Rohini – by a lady whose initials are ‘AS’ (We can’t write her full name here for legal reasons), supported by a certain man (resident of Model Town) with initials MS who owns a private EECO with a crooked driver to pick up injured animals.

Collectively, all 3 of the people mentioned above have dislocated a 14 year old street dog, sent to their place by an ill – informed resident of our colony on 16th March 2016 and he was never returned back. This lady and her gang as we may term it are shameless when it comes to admitting their mistake or even sharing with us how exactly did they misplace this dog, which area did they loose him in and when, so that we can try to search him there, but NO, they didnt reveal a thing – and casually said, “it’s just a lesson for us”.

Is this animal welfare? think again!

Don’t trust any organisation or individual on this work, blindly. Most are just money minting set ups in the name of welfare.

—-

A thing to remember:

– Delhi is a big city with lots of traffic problems so please maintain your calm. Most organisations are understaffed and have limited resources, be with the animal till the ambulance arrives, best option is that you try dropping the animal to the nearest shelter yourself. Follow up on the animals care and make sure that it gets released in the area where it was rescued from (for that is the animals home after all! and If your pockets and hearts allow, please try and make a donation to the hospital that treated the animal to cover the costs of the animals treatment.

– Whenever and Wherever possible, take the animal yourself to a local vet’s clinic or to the Hospital yourself, the NGOs have just one ambulance each mostly, and it may not always be available to attend to your call promptly. Make an effort to save a life, you won’t ever regret it.

Recently, I have witnessed a cruelty by a man who beaten up his dog and left him in his lane just because he is old, he stays in 6/93, old rajinder nagar, he is a known goon in the area and beats these tiny kids. if you can take an action against his cruelty. Like

      • Even if someone files a complaint, the street dogs will only be picked up and taken for sterilisation and vaccination to an NGO run animal hospital with whom MCD has tie up..and after sterilization they are to be released back as per the law in the same area where they were picked up from..you can prevent the dogs being taken away by getting their sterilisation done/coordinated through you. Go meet the Veterinary officer at your nearest MCD zonal office and tell him politely that you are getting all dogs in your area sterilised by directly coordinating with NGO staff. Which area are you writing from? Remember sterilized dogs cannot be picked up again by anyone from their areas (dogs whose sex organs have been surgically removed – the tip of their right ear is cut for identification)..please call us on 9818144244 if you have any doubts.

Your dogs can be sterilized for free at PAWS, a shelter located at Vasant Kunj (Masoodpur Village) that is funded by the MCD and Animal Welfare Board of India for carrying out street dog sterilizations in Delhi. Just make sure that you continue to monitor your dogs at all steps during this procedure, till the time they are fit to be released back into your area after being operated upon. You can call us for any guidance you may need on 99589 80909. Thanks.

    • It is better to kill them if you don’t get anyone to adopt them, but never try to give them in a shelter. I killed whole family of litter after giving to PAWS — below is the story

I took 3 puppies to them for someone to adopt, paid them 6000 for all of them and also did vaccination 3rd day when I visited them. After a week, I arranged for a puppy to get adopted by someone and we took him home. Same day, he showed symptoms such as vomitting and throwing up food and water. Took him to vet and he told he has parvo for which treatment was given 3 days and then he told it is distemper so he advised to euthanize him. In all, the puppy which was adopted after a week died within a week. What shall I do? I think they keep unvaccinated puppies with parvo and distemper diseased dogs so the puppies are dying. They never asked us to vaccinate them 1st day and surprisingly they asked us to vaccinate them for 6-in-1 injection when we visited 3rd day at 600 per injection. The only problem was “all puppies were Indian breed and females so nobody wanted to adopt them. I can’t bring them home as doctor said there is a possibility of getting other dogs diseased the same way. Can any action be taken?

Market Ppl have been taking care of them; but now they are about a month old and we fear that they might go ahead and travel towards the road where there is a lot of traffic, and so we are concerned about their safety. I clicked their pics and posted on Facebook, for adoption , but there is no response yet. Can you please suggest what to do, especially if there is someone you know that can help them get adopted by people who would care for them ? Please help us save these little puppies. • Get the stray dogs of your area sterilized by making a call at the numbers listed above. And give them some food like biscuits, roti and water in a bowl every time you get a chance to do so. Your action will also encourage some others to do the same. That all! It’s the best way to help street dogs.

  13. Greetings,

The purpose of this mail is to complain against NTPC society in Sector 33, Noida who have tightened a LANGUR from 1-2 years.

I recently shifted to sector 33 and saw a LANGUR in NTPC society in sector 33. On enquiry, I found that the LANGUR is being tightened with a rope from last 1-2 years in the same society. Yesterday night, when I saw him, I felt really sad as the LANGUR sit on a wall tightened to a tree and trying to sleep. He was continuously bitten by mosquitoes and all and was not able to sleep at all.

Somebody told me that they are doing so to avoid the monkeys. I was surprised to hear on how they can do something like that to a animal and can take his freedom.

I came to know that this same situation is from last 1-2 years. I am afraid that the LANGUR will die if the situation persists in the future as well.

This is a straight forward case of animal cruelty in a NTPC society where the, so called, educated people live.

Please see if anything can be done.
mail me at hlgoyal@gmail.com, if any assistance required.

  14. Very glad to be among everyone of you here.We are talking about animals, because we can understand their expression of fear, pain, anger and love they show towards us.In this world, other than human beings there are ANIMALS AND PLANTS.We don’t hurt an animal not because it express its feel, but, because we understand its expression of pain. That means, till we know that a living being is in pain we don’t react.Let me come to the point,I am talking about the PLANTS AND TREES.Sometimes in your life till now you might have a living plant under your feet when you were walking in the park or another place. But you wouldn’t have reacted the same as you would have put your feet on a puppy, right?

    why?

Because the puppy would have reacted by crying, but in case of plant it reacts but it cannot express its pain.
Please take care that you don’t stomp a plant

    once again,
Plants feel the same pain as animals do,the difference is how they express

    THANK YOU

    Like

    • I fully agree with you. Even small creatures are also affected by our innocuous actions.e.g in my home I take care that I never trample ants which are rarely noticed. In parks too, I try not to stomp a plant if I see one while running. But the fact is that every plant and animal species tend to over-populate(if given proper resources) on account of their inherent nature to reproduce. That means we also have take care to retain balance and see to it that every thing is in its proper place else it would become impractical to do these things in long run.

It is propoerly vaccinated in regular interval, have proper vaccination card; but for last six month, the dog is enjoying in the street and like to come home only in the day time that is also not regular. The dog is so found of car is that every day it want a car ride, and i also love to take it for the ride. (As the dog doesn’t come home regulary so we called it rainbow dog- we don’t now when the rainbow will come , but whenever, it comes it give pleasant feeling). In the mean time some body hit the dog with bike and now one of it’s leg is injured. Today, the assistant of the Pet Doctor advised me to sterlized the dog in order the keep it at home. He told me that once the dog will be sterlized, it will not go out and will remain at home. Need two advised from you:- Is it true that the after sterlization the behaviour will change and if so then which are the best place to sterlize dog. I live in South of South Delhi. Prem

    • Prem, as spoken to you over the phone yesterday, please take this dog to Dr. Vijay and get his leg treated first…then ask him any concerns and queries you have on the subject of dog sterilization from him only. Yes, the behaviour of the dog does change post sterilization and generally the dog becomes a bit calmer, but that doesn’t mean he would like to ‘stay at home only’

  27. Hi! I live in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad in a society flat. There is an Indian dog as a pet in the adjacent society. The owners do feed it by hand at times but never take it out for a walk. The dog is always tied in the balcony whether it’s hot or it rains and completes its ablutions there only (they do clean their balcony) At night they take him in and tie it to the inside of the door. It’s really heartbreaking to see the dog barking and whining with the sad look while the owners don’t bother. It’s not like they are an old couple who cannot take care of the dog. It might be that they are scared the dog will snap at them but then they are making it like that. Can anything be done for the dog?

the top of their voices advising me for taking the dog elsewhere so that the dog dont do potty in front of their gate.

so my question is where is the dog suppose to go and do potty……is the road on they do potty belongs to goverment of india or the person who has the house in front of it.
if the road comes under government of india than i really want to understand the right procedure or right way to answer those people because its better to have a solution than daily fights
    .

please give an answer to this question or the rules to handle people of india.

    thanks and regards

    • Rules to handle people of India: don’t listen to their non-sense or if you do, as they say ek kaan se suno aur dossre se nikaal do and that is the only way to live in peace. Just make sure your pet dog is on a leash and you have him vaccinated..try to train him to walk with you out of the colony to do his job, he may learn gradually.

      • Can he do potty in a public park not where people walk but on mud in a corner if we are staying in a colony and not in society flats

        Like

      • Nobody can stop you quoting any law. We assume you are being a responsible pet owner and have your pet on a leash. Try covering the potty with some litter or by kicking some mud off the garden floor…people being people will still harass you, IGNORE them :)

  30. Hi! I want to bring to your attention the serious hazard posed by telephone towers that have come up in residential areas to animals. My next neighbour has a tower atop his terrace and yesterday I saw a bird dangling upside down with one leg stuck in some wire or rope at the top of the tower. No one has rescued the bird even after seeing its frantic struggle to free itself the whole day. The callous attitude of the house owners adds insult to injury. People scream about the danger these towers pose to humans but nothing compares to a living being hanging helplessly on one foot. My heart breaks to say that it seems late now to rescue the bird but i want to initiate some action against the tower owners for improper provisions. Kindly suggest.

I have kittens, but they are Indian. I saw your specifications on them not being Indian but I am still writing. I stay in a hostel and a cat gave birth to a litter of three, one male , two female on 7th March, 2013 in my room. I am taking care of them for the time being, but if they do not find loving home they will become stray in a month or so. In fact once they start trotting and get inquisitive, they may not be treated very kindly by the hostel residents. Therefore I cannot keep them safe and well guarded for too long. So if you are willing to adopt or know someone who is, it will great. Thanks in advance,

WHAT ABOUT THE SMALL PUPPIES WHO ARE LYING ON THE ROAD..and people are so insensitive ,they can’t cooperate..they have got hell lot of problems..all the organizations they only treat the dogs..but should the concern be only limited to the treatment? should not we all work together in eliminating this problem..dealing it with utmost concern and showing love and patience towards these..innocent animals..? we can work together and make a differance a huge one..please help..please..

    • Kriti, they are all doing their job, I am sorry to say its you who are ignorant of the affairs because puppies are not meant to be in shelters amidst hundreds of other sick animals, their immunity is weak/poor and they will contract infection in there and die, thats the reason no animal hospital in delhi takes in puppies unless and until they are accident hit or injured in some other way, only to treat them…it is you who are at fault who think that shelters are ‘lovely’ places where ay cute cuddly puppy you take pity on on the road can live for the rest of his life.

      Like

      • EXACTLY.. that’s what i am saying..there is no shelter facility..for dogs..you are saying that pups will die because they are weak..and less immune..then as per your knowledge allow me to inform you that organizations won’t even take a full grown up dog who’s injured they would treat them that too {not sure} i have personally seen the conditions of dozens of organizations and the kind of treatment given..only few of them works honestly and are in real sense”non profit”…..i must say you probably don’t understand what i am saying… of course…i am not asking for shelter homes.,..or grand palaces…for puppies or dogs to live their luxuriously all their lives..!! it’s for time period..until they learn to take care for themselves..by just vaccinating..and taking in an injured dog…population can’t be controlled.and furthermore…there is no harm even if the dogs are given shelter be it pups or big dogs..i personally had a talk with several people they would treat the animal/pups/dog/ whatever and then would release them again..on the roads..so that he can get hit again..be again treated…and it follows..so in my view ignorant are those..who write in their blogs in capital letters mind you..SHELTER FOR STREET PUPPIES AND DOGS and upon calling ..they would we don’t provide shelter…!! that’s what i am talking about..either don’t write..and if you write..then for god’s sake ..work on it!

        Like

      • We don’t want to argue with you, for we do what we feel is right and we take in injured animals in our home verandah or get them admitted in a hospital, sponsor their medical treatment (they may all be ‘non profit’ but they do seek donations/need funds to do all the good work they aim to do) and then once they have recovered, we release them back to their streets. If all hospitals or people like us who foster them to recovery, keep holding onto healthy treated animals, where will there be a space to treat a sick animal actually in need. A well-meaning advice to you: just do what you can with your own hands and stop blaming others, the blame game would never end and it will only make you a bitter sounding helpless person. Do whatever good you can and become a better person whose actions speak louder than their words.

    • Animal Hospitals/Shelters will not take in pups as they are most likely to catch infection in there amongst many other sick injured animals..the best way to help puppies is to place them in safe locations within your society only (may be an abandoned park or some other place, pray for the best and by nature’s law, only the fittest would survive) and from your end, you may get them vaccinated when they are about a month old. Find a paravet or contact a local vet who can be paid and called for this vaccination service, if you are willing to bear costs.

  47. Hi, I live in Hari Nagar, New Delhi. Last night at around 1:30 a.m., some of the heartless people of our colony attacked some of our street dogs and beat them mercilessly till they were unconscious. They then took them away along with their puppies. God only knows, whether they are alive or have been killed (I would rather say murdered). I want to know what can be done in such a situation. I am sure an MCD Van would not have come late in the night. It looks like a deed of some of our locals only. Isn’t there a law and a punishment to those who commit such dreadful acts in the name of population control??

There is an 8 month old female stray dog in my colony in Ghaziabad. She was abandoned by her mother when she was born and she was hardly a few days old when a car ran over her hand. I took her to the vet and fortunately, she is walking fine now although the hand is quite deformed, Anyways, now my colony RWA are hell bent on relocating all the dogs including her from our society. I have been getting into arguments with them over this but I am not sure till when I will be able to let the dogs remain here. I was interested in getting this particular dog spayed before she gives birth to her first litters so that if she relocated, atleast she will be better prepared to face the tough conditions. Hence, I wanted to check where to get her spayed from and how much will it cost?

    Thanks,

    • Yes, he can be sterilized at this age very easily. With regard to the puppies, we advise you shift them to a shaded area near their existing location, like an underside/back alley..place a few bories/gunny bags over there to save them from the rain and the chill. With regard to the vaccinations, 10-in-one vaccines can be done now and deworming should be done now. They can be sterilized only when they are 6-7 months old, you can take them yourself to Dr. Vijay’s clinic 9810054693 in North West Delhi’s Ramesh Nagar who does street dog sterilizations at his clinic for people who tend to street dogs at nominal/minimal costs.

I’ve never seen it inside the house. Its given food there only. The dog eats, sleeps, defecates there only. A couple of days back I saw atleast 10 to 12 days of his excreta which clearly means its not being treated well. The dog is left in the balcony even through the nights (considering the recent temperatures, its very cruel).

I’ve not contacted the owners yet but will do so today or tomorrow. But just wanted to know if any intervention should be done if I dont get a favourable resonse. And also that if you could help in this.

    • Ishan, please download a copy of the Prevention of Cruety to Animals Act 1960 from this link http://www.envfor.nic.in/legis/awbi/awbi01.pdf. Under Section 11 of the PCA Act, all that you have described this dog is being subjected to, amounts to ÇRUELTY. We suggest you take a print out of the same and speak to the owners of this animal and try and educate as well as gently warn them that what they are doing is inhumane and illegal as well. And if they don’t mend their ways, you will be filing a complaint in the nearest Police Station against these people (Click Photographs with dates in the meantime) and file the complaint against these people (giving full address details, description of cruelty, how it contravenes, which sections of PCA Act 1960) and attach the photos with the complaint. Get a photocopy of the complaint stamped and received by the Police Station and keep it for your records. The Police is mandated, as you can read in the PCA Act 1960 as being the agency responsible for the Enforcement of the PCA Act 1960 at a state/national level, though they may not be aware of it, gently make them aware, don’t loose spirit.

    • Sir, you seem to be an educated citizen of the country. But your comment seems ill-informed and impatient.

Please be informed that that as per Indian law, street dogs cannot be beaten or driven away. They can merely be sterilized in the manner envisaged in the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001 (Rules under Indian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960), vaccinated, and then returned back to their original locations. Gurgaon Municipal Corporation runs the Animal Birth Control Programme with few animal NGOs based out of Gurgaon and they may be contacted for the same, to ensure that the dogs you mention are sterilized.

The street dogs help keep the neighbourhood safe! Even Police forces in Naxal infested areas use street dogs to warn them of potential danger. (You may read this https://jaagruti.org/2010/04/18/march-2010-onwards-news-reports-of-maoists-killing-street-dogs-in-different-indian-states/)

Fights may be happening because of a bitch being on ‘heat’. Instances of the same will reduce post sterilization.

The planet was made for all of us to share and peacefully coexist with all species, so humans need to understand to live peacefully and behave around the dogs, if you hit/provoke them/shoo them away, they may react in self-defence.

Please read through the articles, https://jaagruti.org/2010/04/18/the-indian-street-dog/ and https://jaagruti.org/information-to-empower-you/indian-street-dogs-and-their-rights/ for a better understanding of the subject.

    • Hi,Sterilization can be done only when they are about 6-7 months old. You can however get them vaccinated now. For putting them up for adoptions, contact People for Animals and take them to the pup adoption stalls they put up in various malls or post their pics on Facebook pages of Red Paws Rescue, Friendicoes etc.Regards.

There are lots of peacocks living in this plot. Recently, University started construction in this plot and started removing the vegetation due to which peacocks are losing their habitat and wandering in to nearby colonies. Stray dogs try to catch them and I am really worried about their safety. Is there any way by which these Peacocks and Peahens can be shifted to a safe place/zoo? Kindly do something quickly. If I need to inform some other helpline/groups kindly let me know ASAP.
    Thanks.

      • No. please dont leave your dog in PAW vasant kunj. They are just making money in the name of NGO. On the website, its clearly metion that they have low cost medications for starys and even free sterlization but when i went their and asked they were asking for Rs. 500 for each dog. The shelter is poorly taken care of. I had a bitter experience their as i lost my dog. They asked for Rs. 1500 in case of keeping your dog in shelter until he gets fine. They dont take care properly. My dog was seriously ill. Please never and ever leave your dog in shelters and especialy paw delhi .I have recently lost one of my dog like this. He was ill, i took him to this place in massodpur for medication and decided to leave him for night as he was critical and he may require 24*7 medical attention. They deposited a amount of Rs. 1500 from me and said they will look after the dog and i dont need to worry as there will be 24*7 support on phone. But to my surprise, when i went their at night , i found that shelter was closed from outside and there were no one to look after all the dogs present their. On knocking near by shelter house( meant for care takers), 2 people came out and said that the shelter is locked and they dont have the keys. Care taker will come in the morning. It was so bad experience for me. Even they do not respond to 24*7 helpline numbers. In the morning after constant calling, one guy picked and when asked about my dog, they told he expired. They didn’t even bother to call me and tell that my dog died. They didnt take any interest in caring for the dog. even the doctor present their was more interested in treating dogs of the riches.
Seriously, there is no place for strays.no one cares.

      For others,

Below is the true story of PAWS vasant kunj

Now the problem is my parents will be away for about 2 and a half months and I am a working women. My baby is too small to live on his own. I am looking for all possible options like having in house maid to take care of him or keep him in creche from 9 AM to 7 PM but nothing seems to be getting materialized,
I stay in Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi and please suggest me some options so that my baby remains safe and happy while I am in office. I have a five days working office, so week ends my baby will stay with me.
Hoping to hear something favorable from you. I am in desperate need to keep him safe and sound and I do not want to leave him alone also.

    • We suggest you take the dog yourself to Dr. Vijay’s clinic, its near Ramesh Nagar Metro Station and get the injuries examined, if he needs hospitalisation, then you can consider shifting it to Sonadi Animal Hospital in Najafgarh, that he can direct you to…once the animal has recovered, he can be taken back from the hospital and live his life freely on the street as he was. OR Alternatively you can get the Animal admitted for treatment to Sanjay Gandhi Animal Hospital, at Raja Garden…located behind Shivaji College. Make sure you get the animal back on the street as soon as he has recovered from his injuries..life in a hospital is no life for a healthy animal.

    • Does the park have a board saying so that you can’t walk dogs inside, then it is better that you either refrain from walking your dogs in that park or do so when there are no people walking around, meaning late at night…best option is to find an alternate park to take your dog to and also walk him on the road…understand that your dog is young now, habits inculcated in him now off walking on the road and other areas will help you avoid confrontation and unnecessary harassment from the people around when your dog grows big in size.

  94. Hi Jaagruti,
I’m a student and stay in a hostel in Greater Noida, just adjacent to my hostel building is a residential society. There’s an apartment which i can see clearly from my 6th floor balcony, which has 2 dogs, one of them is about 6months old labrador and another is a female, she’s seems to be a senior dog and i don’t know her breed. Well these 2 dogs are owned by a some boys. Now the thing is that i believe that the 2 dogs are being neglected by their owners. I have been observing them for some months now.. They are never taken out for walks, they excrete on their apartment terrace. Its littered with their excreta and urine. The dogs are never exercised, i have never seen them play with their dogs or anything! The dogs have nowhere to play and run. They are mainly confined in that small apartment. Earlier they used to play on terrace sometimes, but for the past couple of weeks i haven’t seen them on the terrace, not even once! They bark and howl. Even right now, as i write this, they are locked in their apartment, its all dark there, not even a flicker of light. Their owners are not at home, i guess and they are barking for help.
Just the other night i saw one of the boys beating the small labrador pup with this collar leash.
It seems they are fed daily, but that’s it! They spend most of their time confined in that tiny apartment.
I have tried to give the dog owners benefit of doubt several times, but i can’t do it anymore, there does seems to be something wrong.
Please is there any way i can do something about it. This is really freaking me out! I don’t know the owners, they don’t even live in my society so i can’t contact them, and since i’m a student i don’t want to contact police as that would upset my parents. Please tell me what to do.
    Thanks.

      • Pooja, Its true that its not good to kill any animal but pets like dog are very much dependent on the master as they have spent their lifetime. In the difficult time of your pet if you put him or her to a shelter it will only make survival difficult for that loyal friend…So in this situation its better re-leave them. I think in this situation if we dump our pet to a shelter it will be a torture to them and a sin for us. God bless.

  101. Sub: Menace created by stray dogs in Harphool Vihar, Jai Vihar Phase III, near naya pul, Delhi-110043

    Dear Sir,

We wish to bring to your notice the menace of stay dogs in our area. There are more than 20 – 25 stray dogs around the main road and in between the blocks.
    Problem created by them:

    1. Creating dirtyness in and around the area.
    2. Dog bite cases have been observed frequently.
    2. In night – Its difficult to come on bike / 2 wheeler as they keep on chasing us.
    3. Frequent fights in between stray dogs keep happening.
    4. Continous barking in night.

Even today I have been chased by 4 dogs while I was going to office.

Kindly provide guidance to make these sterilized so that the people could be safe.

On behalf of all concerned residents

I can’t keep them as well as I already have a non-adjusting dog. Can you help me find a animal shelter for them? It can be anywhere in Delhi/ NCR.

This shifting of kittens from back yards to the road happened today. So I wish to transfer them to a shelter by tomorrow coz i don’t think they will survive any longer on the road, if they are not dead already. Sigh.

    • We had replied to the above message of yours through an email that very day, asking you your location or if the mother of these kittens is not there anymore, as we do not advocate putting young animals in a shelter, they hardly survive in there for long owing to their low immunity and being prone to infection at such young age from neighbouring sick animals

      • I did not receive any email. i just checked again. Anyways. last time we took 1 kitten in and another one went in some other home. Now today, one kitten again went to that backyard from where they get thrown out. While he was being thrown, i took him in again. I could see one more kitten in the apartment next to mine. Rest can not be seen ATM.

Location is Ghaziabad, but I can drop them anywhere in Delhi/ NCR if there are any willing takers. Mother is around somewhere. This is her 4th generation here. Every time a couple of families used to feed and take care of the kittens. But this time though, there are new occupants in a home who don’t seem to like kittens. Hence the problem. Mother would again do the same thing, taking them back to the backyard of house behind me but the kittens will again go back to that dangerous house and will again be thrown out. First time there were 5 (3 days ago), today there are just 2. Next time if nobody is around to save them, there might be none. So I thought leaving them in a shelter might be a good idea even if it means separating them from there mother coz mother is not of much help here (even though she is a champ and one of the most fearless and brave kitty I have ever seen). She is as helpless and clueless as me.

    • Cats are more independent in comparison to dogs. I understand that you have a dog who might not adjust. If you can then you can purchase a cage and keep the kittens for a month or two. They will be good to set free.

    • Animal shelters are not good place for them. If possible please try to find a temporary home for them. And in the meanwhile you can try placing ads in quikr, along with the photos. I tried the same for 3 kittens and was hundred percent successful. The responses were quick and mostly genuine with a few exceptions. Best of luck.

    • Sir, you may request an NGO Directly to help you with sterilization of dogs in your area…the hospital nearest to you Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre does not do any self pick ups, its the MCD that drops street dogs over here for sterilization exercise/surgery…..in such a scenario, Sonadi Animal Hospital (www.sonadi.org) can be approached, the trouble is that they are based out of Najafgarh, far away from Keshav Puram…alternatively, there is a private animal ambulance service run by a person/freelance paravet who can ensure pick up of street dogs and take them to Sonadi on his own for sterilization and return them vaccinated and with their one ear half notched post sterilization (as identification mark of a sterilized dog)

  107. Hello ,
first of all this is the most informative indian website i have seen so far which gives valueable and relevant information to people like us who lack knowledge on taking care of pets.
Iam a student preparing for civil services and 1 month back i found a abandoned german shepherd pup approximately 2 months old near my locality in the night . he was very weak u cud actually feel his ribs , he was abandoned in the most hot time of the year and was dehydrated and had diarrhea as well plus he was not eating anything n looked frightened. I took him to the vet n got him treated with the best i cud , the vet started with Iv drips morning evening n got him tested for parvo . after shelling a fortune on his vaccinations he recovered just fine . the vet has suggested royal canine german shepherd junior 30 for him but he does nt eat much of it and only eats when when we give him paneer n eggs along wid dog food . As iam a student i cant afford so much but i really want to help him grow up into a big healthy and happy dog . can u suggest a vet in south delhi near IIT or haus khas or munirka or nearby who can give me some subsidies so that it does not burn a hole in my pocket plus i cud take care of him in the best possible way with all the care .

    • Hi Bhanu, firstly thank you f or your kind words..now to answer your query: dogs only need one doze of vaccinations per year except for the time when they first get vaccinated (when one is required to get booster shots of both 10-in-one injection- first given at 45 days of age—- and Anti-Rabies Vaccination–first given at 90 days of age — given again after 1 month of the first shot being given) – thereafter every year, as the dog turns adult and an year old- you can give both the 10-in-one vaccination and Ant-Rabies Vaccination on the same day to an adult dog. Deworming needs to be done every three months ideally and the tablets are readily available from any Pet Shop of brands like Worex and Plozin, which is to be given with food as per body weight of the dog….dogs if given good exercise and fed a healthy diet otherwise dont really need monthly visits to the doctor…if any vet is asking you to bring your pet over every month or giving more vaccinations than required for no reason, then you are definitely being conned…so just be cautious—also your dog since he is young can easily be put on a diet of roti soaked in milk and water (50:50 ratio of milk and water) and have it with paneer sprinkled on it…you need not feed him just with dog food, infact we give our dogs- street dogs–some dog food as snacks every evening, not as their main diet- when the pups are young they eat small meals, but once they are 6-8 months of age they can easily be trained to have two good meals a day – one in the morning after walk and then in the evening 2 hours before the walk—just keep a bowl of water and a bowl of diluted milk in 50:50 ratio accessible to your dog all the time, so that he can go and drink it whenever he feels thirsty…and lastly, we would like to commend you for giving home and love to an abandoned animal, wish there were more people with hearts like yours….you can even take your dog to NDMC’s Veterinary Hospital in Moti Bagh, that is subsidised else just remember that other than annual vaccinations pets don’t need more visits to the doctor – if they are otherwise fit and fine and feeding well

    • Sir,

The only legal and scientific way of dealing with street dogs is to get them vaccinated and sterilized under the Supreme Court of India-endorsed and Municipal Corporation of Delhi backed
Animal Birth Control Programme (ABC). To read more on the same, please click here https://jaagruti.org/2010/04/18/the-indian-street-dog/. Residents and members of the RWA, few of them, will always have a grudge against street dogs! They fail to realise that removing one set of street dogs will only bring in another set from the neighbourhood to take this place…coupled with this please also note that the street dogs can not be killed or dislocated, its a punishable, besides being an inhumane offence. Please stop referring to them a ‘problem’ if you have these thoughts, then you will always think negatively about them, the streets are their only home if you were to think rationally rather than in a selfish/self-centred way as you are at the moment.

Sterilization helps calm the dogs down and may be even you other than the few who already are feeding them (Dog Feeding is endorsed by the Delhi High Court as well. Read this https://jaagruti.org/information-to-empower-you/delhi-high-court-ruling-on-feeding-street-dogs/) can start feeding these dogs a biscuit or two daily.

You can submit a request in the MCD zonal office to get these dogs and others in your area sterilized, it will be a favour on these dogs too as they will be vaccinated in the process and will not have to give birth to pus anymore, something they can’t otherwise do without human intervention. Please take assistance from those who feed these dogs as otherwise catching them for sterilization and vaccination by untrustworthy people/hospital staff will become a failed exercise if they run away!

Love begets love. Hatred begets hatred, though animals only react in self defence or out of fear; and their barking at day or night keeps the anti-social elements at bay. They are the neighbourhood watchdogs and companion to the security services. You seem to be well educated as well, you would understand that man and animal need to coexist in harmony. Try to understand them and their emotions as well. If people scream and shreak/speed up vehicles from very near to them or try to run away screaming like kids do- in front of street dogs, they also get scared and may act in self defence by barking/running. No animal barks unnecessarily, unless they sense a threat.

    • Sahil, it is surprising that a young person like you can be so intolerant towards dogs, if an elderly RWA Waaalas were behaving this way, we can still understand because they have problems with everything almost! Try and understand the dogs are not barking on you, if that was teh case they would have barked at you even when you leave every evening, they are barking at 4.30am/5am because that is the hour they are most active (being nocturnal animals) and it is in their natural trait to safeguard their territories at night of any outsider, and their barking is triggered by the cab you arrive in, we suggest you calm down a bit yourself, we very well understand that working such strange shifts drives a lot of people insane, but please do calm down and next time onwards try carrying a pack of biscuits with you, sit down somewhere after you deboard from the cab and let the dogs know that you have no intent of harming them, do some talking with them, ask them if they have any problems with you and offer them a biscuit with you…you would be surprised that in a week or so’s time their behaviour towards you will change….before you think I am a crazy girl writing all this, please allow me to share that more than a decade and a half back I used to be very scared of dogs and have toppled all the way down three floors over the stair case just because they barked at me…I gradually learnt how to behave around them and get them to trust me, and today no matter which area I walk in miles away from my home also, the street dogs can just sniff that I think no ill of them…now its my duty to also tell you the legal aspect since you have been using a few swear words in your comments which we have moderated and edited out – The only legal and scientific way of dealing with street dogs is to get them vaccinated and sterilized under the Supreme Court of India-endorsed and Municipal Corporation of Delhi backed

Take him home first so that he’s not harmed anymore, then look for helping him further. Dear pls prioritize things Thats required. All the best. And do fight against those shameless neighbours and owners. You shall win but if you step back they Will surely win and Thats what is not acceptable. I did the same in my neighbourhood and hav fearlessly adopted 7 strays. All the best. Adopt the Poor baby.

He was just a homeless pup who has a habit of siting near common entrances to buildings which proved to be his biggest mistake. I already have a pet adopted from Kanpur so I can’t adopt him. But i shall continue my fight for his protection. Really appreciate people responding so well to these causes.

My one year old male cat James has been missing for one week now. He is orange in colour, smallish size, and he has a green collar. He liked to wander so we weren’t worried for the first few days but now he hasn’t returned after six days so we are contacting all the animal shelters in Delhi to see if maybe they picked him up. I live in Malviya Nagar, and i would really appreciate it if maybe you could speak to the people in charge of any animal shelters nearby and find out whether they have rescued any such cat in the last few days. My email is sakurayasha1995@gmail.com. If you do find him i would be very grateful.

I have called Friendicoes 3x regarding an injured stray outside my office. They have yet to pick up the dog and I’m seeking another resource. I’m unable to transport the dog. The office very near the Green Park metro. Please advise – I gave the dog some food today but remain worried.

    • You can try getting that dog picked up by a private ambulance service for animals…he will charge but atleast you can be rest assured that he will be transported to the hospital you wish to get him treated from and coordinate with the hospital staff..

Now if you can help men then please do the needful as I am totally confused then if they don’t have any medicine with them then why government gave salary to a doctor with a compounder and also give rent aginst that hospital.

I stay in kalkaji extn….and I am not a lover of pet animals…Love the to watch only on national Geographic Channel ……so my problem is in my building staircase there are two stray dogs in poor condition…people without any knowledge feed them with all wrong things and that further makes these two dogs poor… I request if some dog caring NGO could actually come and take these dogs in a better place….one of them have bitten many people who have entered this building. Kindly suggest or share a number of an organisation who specialises in rehabilitation of such unfortunate dogs.

    Like

    • Sir, since you watch channels like NatGeo and Animal Planet, you have been mistaken by this illusion that rehabilitation centres exist in cities for street dogs…whereas the truth is that in cities like Delhi and other Indian cities, there only exist hospitals to treat sick and injured street animals to full recovery and Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centres wherein street dogs picked up by the MCD/municipality are vaccinated and sterilized i.e. their sex organs are surgically removed…and then as per national laws and rulings of Honourable Supreme Coyrt of India, they are to be released back into the same areas where they were picked up from as they are territorial animals…removing street dogs doesnt solve the situation …you remove tge existing ones and new ones will take their space…the best yoy can thus do for these 2 dogs in yoyr staircase is to get them picked up for sterilization and vaccination. ..and also since you know the ideal food that should be fed to tgese dogs should not be sweet, oily or salty, maybe you can make the effort of sharing this with those people who feed these dogs “anything” (that you mentioned in your comment)

  137. Hello Sir/Mam,
Somebody hit a street dog , a small puppy in our locality. I called up PFA Sector-55 , Faridabad at 9 PM and requested for ambulance. The ambulance reached after 2 and a half hrs after my 12 calls which is really disappointing. They said driver is not available and this was an emergency case. Being alone at home at that point of time I was not able to take that puppy to the Vet hospital. Can you please tell me the reason of such delays.

    Like

    • We cannot answer on any organisations behalf…but the reason that could be is that each of the above mentioned are NGO run hospitals and have just one ambulance each which is inundated with calls and cases and can only be at one place at one time and perhaps thats why one faces long waiting times and delays

      Like

    • My apologies if my comment sounds rude and impolite….. We Indians so called human don’t bother to pick a dying human..then who will assure to help an animal. Do you think being alone in home can stop you from helping the poor animal??? You could have easily managed some way to help. There is scarcity of vets hospital for stray.

We are happy to buy off-roaders as they are cheap now, We happily buy a 50 k phone. Do we donate to the NGO who help animal?

My advice to everyone is – not to copy western countries to increase your hunger for luxury….make sure that people around you managed to meet their need at least.

In western countries like US, people find proud to be a fireman, who often come to rescue human and animal. Does any parent ask their kid to be a fireman. Does any kid in our country want to become a fireman. If we yet don’t change our way of thinking then WHO will come for HELP. We never made or raised any helper, then why to blame

Please stop blaming and start taking initiative at least in nearby areas. Increase awareness.

Ashima nothing personal to you but I feel depressed to see people not helping. Just thought to write few lines hoping to awaken readers.

Please wake up and HELP the needy. Spend some money, some time. I am sure that brings happiness. I have tried and tested.

      • Its a really good idea.
We can reach out to schools and teach children because most of the children are very close to animals specially dogs. Helping animals can be taken as a activity by schools, best helping kid can be awarded by school and government. “Help” should come from heart. Kids have pure heart and mind to help animals. Parents want best marks for their kids and lots of awards for sure. This way we can get parents involved too. I am unaware of legal challenges to put it to action.

    • Are you sure the mom is no more? They are too young for sterilization right now…that should be done only when they are about 5-6 months old…snd anti rabies vaccination should be administered not before they are 90 days old…ten in one vaccine can be given at 45 days with s booster after one month of the first date of injecting the 10 in one vaccine. ..deworming you can do yourself, please go and buy puppy deworming suspension like Drontal or Worex from neighbourhood pet shop snd read the instructions behind….if the pupscdont have their mom anymore, you should feed them puppy cerelac or lactogen 4-6 times a day…little by little. .and start increading meal size and reducing meal numbers as they grow up

In case if you are seeking any info to help for the puppies, you can always call me at 9971010412. Great job. May God bless you and the little ones.

I don’t feel sorry to say that most of the vet who are running private clinic are robbing people. I found doctors in NDMC very genuine.

Most of us keep ourself away from helping poor and injured animal as they have to spend lot of money. So I think its better to educate people that there is a option where you don’t have to pay or pay a very minimal amount, just you need to take the animal there.

NDMC Moti Bag, New Delhi does regular checkup and vaccination for free to local breeds.
For accidents Friendicoes, Defence Colony, New Delhi is a better place.

The best vets are those who love animals.

If you can – try and get your hands on books by James Herriot – “If only they could talk”, “All creatures big and small” etc – these tell the story of a vet who lives in small town who loves animals.

If you have a problem getting them let me know.

If the birds are injured, only then can you request for them being treated by organisations like WildlifeSOS, else please learn to coexist in harmony with other species as well.

  164. Kudo’s to the Jaagruti team,

I have got fantastic inputs from here – I am based in Faridabad and am looking for a good doc to get a indie bitch spayed. She had a litter of 6 puppies in July and we have just managed to successfully place all of them.

The happiness we feel in getting them good homes is just huge.

The first pup was taken by my niece to the USA (who was inspired by Pamela Anderson- she adopted an Indian stray and took her to the USA) when she was 5 -6 weeks old. The second was placed at a friends farm in Chattarpur. Immediately after we placed him, the remaining 4 contracted Parvu fever one after the other and for a few weeks we were practically living at the vets clinic (taking the dogs there twice a day for IV and some antibiotics to help with secondary infections). After a lot of anxiety and considerable expense we managed to save them all. Just last week we placed two of them at a farm in Gurgaon – today we went and visited them and they were both really happy and loving living on the farm. On the way back from the farm a gentleman visited us who wanted to see the remaining two pups – he dropped in and saw them and requested them for his place. They will be taken in a week to ten days – he is having the gate fixed so that they cannot slip out of the premises.

As a family of animal lovers, we have faced the kind of problems so many of the people here have posted about. The inputs you have provided here are very useful and we will have a meeting with the Prez of our RWA (who has been chased by some people on our street to take action against us) to sensitize him to the various legal laws that exist to protect these strays (all gods creatures with a right to share our planet).

Do let me know if there are any good (tried and tested) NGO’s spaying dogs in Faridabad? From some of the feedback I have had – the survival rate of spayed desi/indie dogs done by NGO’s is very low if they are released back immediately after the operation. Most of these NGO’s do not have the facility to keep them on till they recover fully.

We are also open to travel to any part of the NCR to get the spaying done from a dependable and reliable source. We would also be willing to contribute/pay for this.

I look forward to hearing from you.

In the event anyone needs help/guidance in taking a dog outside the country – perhaps I could help.

Keep up the good work. Let us know if we can help in any way.

I have a dog myself, however, it is sad to see many pups and stray dogs injured and with diseases. Quite a few of them have become aggressive when you walk on the main road, especially bitches with puppies. There have also been incidents of one female stray biting people. Any suggestions for dog shelters/ngo or a way to get them neutered in the above mentioned area would be much appreciated.

It’s sad to hear the helpless barks and whines every night who’s out in the cold. I hope to have a word with my neighbour when she returns – will offer taking care of the dog in her absence if she plans to travel in the future.

We have a feeling that the dogs are barking because they have been tied up all day long or kept in confined areas all day by their present owners, which is not correct under the law, rather is defined as Cruelty under Section 11(!) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960
